I'm starting to wonder if we are going to talk about big water an big wind might this be a good time to expand this site into a formula/ski boat site? i really find the formula sites rather boring .(unlike Pete) just think of the potential.

former skylark owner now a formula but I cant let this place go

I don't know what it is like on weekends, but probably not much different than the insanity of the Chain of Lakes in Northern IL. Has anyone ever thought of having a reunion on Lake Geneva? Ahhh Duh' I did read goofnut.. He asked the question... But as long as Pete understands wind-shear he'll be allright..... |

Lake Geneva is really a cool lake. But, not ski boat friendly, even on windy week day afternoons. We would launch in Fontana in the AM, and eat lunch in LG. I remember days heading back to Fontana we would encounter wind generated 2' chop. Brutal, even in a Southwind or '87 Martinique.
For boating in that area, we really prefer Delavan Lake. Much more ski boat friendly. Quite a few old CC's on the lake as well. Como is a nice little lake too. Almost no one there during weekdays, and not bad at all on weekends. |

Umm, yes, perhaps it's my ability to read that gives me an advantage over you, lol or are you saying the plan is there is no plan, lmao
Thought it was clear, my response to day trip, not reunion, duh |

CQ, really...., like most can wait and plan on "the wind report" Can you "plan" for how many 35 foot cruisers are going to be on the lake??? Everyone knows, who launch a small boat on Geneva on a weekend, knows its going to be rough and wet... Peter asked about a gathering, which I assume would be on a weekend... Yeahhhh no fun..
Sure Green Lake is brutal most of the time, but at least you don't see any big boats out there except for the PT109 ha... Peter, just go out there during the week if you want to experience the lake. It is cool from the water.. Then plan on coming up to Green Lake with us in July.. |

Lake Geneva is a bit like when we did the Northeast reunion on Lake George. The only time of year it was feasible was before or after tourist season and since our Midwest reunion is mid July it's just not a suitable venue.

Don't listen to those dunce caps, lmao, the wind is the biggest problem out there similar to Green Lake, Like any public lake around here, less traffic during the week but more importantly, plan based on the wind forecast.
Pete, would love to hear more about that tour, sounds great!! |

Still NO haha .. Peter, that lake gets so rough, you wouldn't enjoy it and your wife will hate it big time... Sure it's close, but take the car, leave the boat at home.. Plan on coming up to Green Lake in July, or for a late season get together, plan on Clinton with us, otherwise, enjoy the flat water on your little pond, I mean Deep Lake haha. You'll thanks us later !!! Moj' |

Peter,
Do take the boat over and explore. I believe LG is a one of a kind area and lake. I do suggest trying to get on the lake on a weekday. As Alan mentioned, the lake just like GL can get real rough especially when the large boats are out. One year when I had the Atom there, I vividly remember taking it out for the lake cruise everyone does at the end of the Saturday show. I didn't get very far out of the Abbey harbor before taking major water over the bow. Soaking wet, my wife (the dog too) turned around and headed back. One of the highlights of the show (but regrettably limited to participants in the show) are the pre show activities. Lake tours of absolutely beautiful homes/estates in the lake launches that are unique to LG have been thrilling to say the least. Car collections, unique boats and even model trains are just some of the things I've seen. The lake launches themselves are fantastic. |

Pete,
I understand they're completely different--just throwing the idea out there for a late season get-together. It's only a 40 minute drive for us, and my wife Lori and I are always looking for stuff to do. We might launch our boat for a day just to experience the things Lake Geneva has to offer. I used to do the Lake Geneva 1/2 Ironman triathlon a week or two before then each year, and I've become attached to the area's geography--but never really spent any time on the water, so that's a possibility. |

Peter,
You mention a reunion on LG and then mention the ACBS Blackhawk show. Understand they are two completely different functions. You can't compare the two. Do plan on attending the show come fall. It's one of the best and I'd say the best in the Midwest. You'll see plenty of beautiful boats. Even though I've moved, I still maintain my Blackhawk chapter membership as well as the Glacier Lakes chapter membership. I do plan on attending. |

Maybe a late season outing if we get a decent end of Summer--Lake
Geneva for the Blackhawk Chapter wood boat show. I've never gone to any of these shows intentionally but after seeing Alan's Hurricane, I'm motivated to see more. http://www.travelwisconsin.com/events/fairs-festivals/antique-and-classic-boat-show-41280 |

This is true Pete! But I saved a sh%#load on incidental parking costs. I will have to go to Lyons one of these days, and try your place. I like trying new places. We normally stay over at Lake Lawn Resort in Delavan, and eat at Mars Resort on Lake Como. Great places, and not as touristy as LG. |

No and the answer is NO! Not as big a lake as Green but has much larger boats on it and busy as heck on the weekends, We'd get destroyed in our little toy boats on that lake. |

Gary is living the good life down South. All of us up here in the frozen tundra of the North must at least, for a moment, (being totally honest now) wish we were down there in the warm sun. I would never want to give up the North, because we have these things called natural, freshwater lakes that are absent alligators and for the most part poisonous snakes, and definitely sharks. We also have NICE summers.
Gary-- hope you don't have anything against Lake Geneva--- it is a real treasure and mid-week on a calm Summer day, it has lots of places to ski, eat, and even stay the night. I don't know what it is like on weekends, but probably not much different than the insanity of the Chain of Lakes in Northern IL. Has anyone ever thought of having a reunion on Lake Geneva? |

David, I consider myself on the older side and at times admit I can be grumpy but, I, like you am enjoying the northern lifestyle! It's just a few like Gary that seems to knock the north. He's a northern Illinois boy that ever since he joined the crowd that goes south for the winter has changed his attitude! Maybe the heated and air conditioned seats he got in that SUV he bought had an influence! You too Jbear!! |

Listening to you guys, I keep getting a visual of "Grumpy Old Men" between the ice fishing and northern lifestyle. That's not a knock at all, love it.

Dave, You should have know better that anyplace in Geneva would cost some $$$! You could have met them at the Ye Olde hotel in Lyons. Same neighborhood, lots less $$, I'm sure better food and no chance of having to park on the lake! |

We went up Friday night to see the festivities and have dinner with some friends. The excitement on the ice "parking lot" was either Saturday or Sunday. I talked to my friend who we went with on Friday night, and he said the city was charging $3K to tow your car out, and the state was issuing a $1000 fine for pollution. Ouch! Coupled with the complete loss of your car, and some healthy fines and fee's, that is one expensive outing. And I thought my dinner was expensive.

They should have combined the cases of beer with some .30-06's and had a scene like in Jaws, pick off the propane tanks from shore. If that scuba tank exploded the shark, I'd think a propane tank would be impressive!
(just kidding, no lectures on guns and alcohol please) |

It's the same here. The Wisconsin DNR gives you 24 hours to get any vehicle out of any body of water. If you don't, then they start the daily fines. Environmental assessments are required as well. I had a friend who put his loaded (full of propane tanks) pickup through the ice in the middle of a 2000 acre lake. He had friends in the logging business so they went at it with a couple log skidders (as well as several cases of beer!). They ended up having to cut a path in the ice almost to shore. By the time they got it out, the pickup was hardly recognizable! They were finding the propane tanks all summer! |

Surprised at the total loss on many of them if they didn't completely submerge. It's pretty clean fresh water, seems like they could be dried out, fluids changed, and be OK.
Speaking of fluids, around here there would be fines for polluting with fuel/oil, but if the cars were told to park there seems like the municipality would be liable for that. |

Reminds me of a one extra cold winter in NY, a bunch of knuckleheads drove down the boat ramp onto the Great South Bay, LI, and proceeded to drive and slide around. Two cars ran into each other (One a pristine 1971 Chevelle SS Big Block!) And someone stated. "Who do we call to report, the Police or the Coast Guard?" Hahaha

Jeff,
Yes, the cars were in shallow water. It was winterfest in Lake Geneva. All the on shore parking was full so the overflow area was down the boat ramp onto the lake. |
