Grounding to the engine is the best. Grounding to the hull and then to the engine is OK...if that's what your talking about.
I burned a "Field" wire and had a very tough time trouble shooting an old Ford before I found out the engine ground was loose. Good Luck |

OK ... I don't get this. I have been pouring over the wiring diagram to my Greymarine 4 -75 and one thing doesn't make sense ... Does the negative terminal on the battery attach to a bolt on the engine housing to complete a circuit when the starter is turned, or is the negative terminal on the battery supposed to be run directly to a grounding bar on the hull. Thanks.
