If it's looking awfully weak, you might as well do it now instead of later, otherwise it makes for a big hard to stop leak when it decides to let go.

Never a bad idea but, you need to pull the shaft and with a single taper shaft, that can be a job.

So quick question....what about that rubber hose piece below the coupling where the shaft goes out the boat.  That has never been changed and is looking awfully weak.

Unless you have a "dripless" prop shaft seal, the seal is actually a rope seal inside the packing gland where the shaft enters the bilge.  Is your's leaking? It should drip some since the rope packing is water lubricated.

Hi Gang,

You all have been amazing!  Thank you. So the two problems I posted before have been solved.  Windshield broken on left side...local glass shopped fixed it for me for $121.00 and the distributor has been replaced.  Thank you all.

So I have never replaced the shaft seal.  I am looking to order one.  I am guess that size is a 1" shaft seal.  Believe it or not I have the original one on there.
