Looking good Alan,

I wouldn't go too long without some one minute long wot runs up to full speed to set those rings, proper break in is crucial and its always fun to see what she will do, just make sure she is up to temp first and after your 1 min at wot reduce to just under 3000 or so... repeat as necessary at least once a half hour for the first five - 10 hours.

Thanks for the kind words, advice encouragement along the way guys. I wouldn't even have attempted this if not for this site. This was a very rewarding (and Ambitious) project for me and I was still nervous until we actually got under way yesterday.

All's left now is to get some hours on it, a little fiddling with carb and tuning, and some experimenting with props later on.

Pat, we'll see you saturday.

Jbear, we'll get down to see you some day.

MM, Gotta get some pics of our boats side by each. I'm thinking she'll be green by July? Have a good week all.

Wow does that look sweet! What a job you have done on the whole project. Musta been so cool to get her in the water. Really like the look of the white dash and silver windshield.

Well the rain came and went and we finally made it to the river. Our test drive went flawlessly. I am blown away by the holeshot the boat has and we only had the 13x13 oj on today. Can't wait to get some more hours on it so we can start playing around with props and see what it's got for top end. So far the package we put together seems to be a winner. The boat jumps out of the water and climbs to 4000 very quickly, that was as hard as I pushed for today but it wants to run. The throttle response is awesome, can you tell I'm stoked.

Here's a few pics, to top it off the river was like glass and we basically had it to ourselves.

Tim,

The clamp is just a spring loaded type, looks sort of like a clothes pin. Clamped on to the pushrod. You might also be able to use a small c clamp.

Looks like we'll finally drop mine in the water sunday for it's maiden voyage. Can't believe it's been ready for a month and there's just no free time to play with it.

I ended up using a dial indicator with a magnetic base. I Bottomed out the lifter like the other methods, attached a small clamp to the pushrod then set the dial indicator to 0 and backed off the rocker nut, took a reading, shimmed as needed and rechecked my measurement. Good to go.

Alan, the time has come for me to put my new RR's on. I want to recheck my preload all around and I like the way you did it with the dial indicator- it seems to be a more precise measurement.

I have a screw down dial indicator (not a magnetic base, but could possibly borrow another one that is). I think it would be possible to attach something to the pushrod to take a reading from like you did- only the intake wont be removed. I cant tell what type of clamp you used- any thoughts on what might work?

Thank Munday, I'll pick some up and give it try. Still can't believe of all the things that could have gone wrong the water pump is leaking.

Well I'm sitting here having a celebratory Coors Light and a big sigh of relief. Tied up a few loose ends this morning, primed the carb and it fired up in seconds.

Sounds very good, there was a little bit of rocker noise thats seems to have gone away after running for 20 minutes for the cam breakin.   80 lbs of hot oil pressure. No oil leaks.

I did do something wrong with the water pump of all things, it leaking like a seive at the bottom so I must have done something wrong with the gaskets and the backer plate. I'll have to pull it and reinstall. I'll have to tackle that next week but for now a small victory.

Alan: The motor looks awesome! The fact that you did it yourself makes it even better. Will look so cool in that beautiful boat of yours. Wish I could be at GL to see it in person.

It rained all day so my plans to pull the boat off the trailer and clean the bottom changed to inside work. I decided to drop the engine in. Got about 95% done. Still have some wiring to tidy up, adjust throttle and shift cables, align it and finish hooking up the raw water supply and I'll be ready to fire it up next weekend. keeping my fingers crossed.

Thanks guys.

Doc, I know what you mean, I've assembled this thing 20 times in my head. Took my time and tried to check everything I did atleast 2-3 times. Keep your fingers crossed.

MM, I mounted the carb without the spacer plate for now and the carb sits at exactly the same height as it would with the old cast iron intake and spacer. The old steel fuel line bolted right on without any mods so I know the flame arrestor will fit.I may put the spacer on later and see if there is any difference in performance but for I'm good to go.

Will we be at Green Lake, absofloginlutley, see you there.

Well were as far as we can go now and hopefully next week I'll find the time to drop the motor back in the boat. Hollywood came by today to pick up the old carb and lend a hand, kicked back a few beers, had a hamburger and shot the breeze for a few hours.

The valve covers and carb will come off when we go to drop the motor in but I couldn't help myself, I had to put em on for the pictures.

Yes, they were a little more money than I wanted to spend but I couldn't get the lenght I wanted in a standard heat treated steel pushrod. Had to go with Crane chrome molley.

Very interesting. I suspect I have some variation between valves as well- I got a little bit of clacking noise when I put the new heads on. Hopefully Ill be able to shim them to within spec.
