Peter wet sanded and buffed. There are some chips and junks. We'll live with them along with the ugly snaps.

The boat was completed after almost 3 years. It came out better than expected and we did far more work to it than we anticipated when we bought it. I fell off the picture taking along the way, so these are about all we have for pictures at the end of the project.

This boat would never have come out so good without the help of everyone on CCF. It was a great first project and a good example of what first time beginners can do with a little bit of help from their friends.

Peter, haven't seen it. I went over to the camp a few weeks ago to see if that Mustang and junk Skylark were still there, but they're gone. The whole place had been cleaned up and there was no sign of them.

Pete, he started a 25' lobster style boat last week. I think one side of its bow has more area than the entire Mustang. He's learned it all from CCF.

Bruce,
Looks great. Now with all the problems with kids finding jobs these days, he could go into boat buffing!!

Alan, I told him I'd like him to have to whole boat done by the weekend and he just looked at me. I was even calling him Majicman trying to stroke his ego a little bit, but it didn't work. He was pretty wiped out last night. Goal is to have it done by the NE Reunion.

Looks great Bruce. Now your son just has to do that 10 times over on the rest of the boat!!!

Great Project

My son spent 7 hours wet sanding and buffing the motor box yesterday. It came back amazingly good.

Poor starting was due to an air leak in the newly installed water seperating fuel filter.

Steve, it's a Carter 1 barrel. I forget the model. I believe it is the original set up and has not been converted. I may have been losing a little bit of top end due to the linkage, but only about 1/4". (Also had the whole family, (5)in the boat). The 12x11 is cupped.

There are 2 screws on the carb, one for the idle adjustment and one that looks like a needle valve. I've turned them till it idles the best, but cannot figure why it doesn't want to start.

Bruce,
Looking GOOD!!! What carb are you running? Mine has the old Carter YH sidedraft. Wasnt expecting to see the downdraft on yours.

I'm surprised it will only pull 3gs with the 11. Ive been running a 12-12, with the old junk head and pulling 33 to 3400. Anxious to get mine out to see what the "new' head will do. (Waiting for an accelerator pump for the carb).

Made some good progress and took the Mustang for its first ride yesterday. About everything is complete and it is ready to have the vinyl floor and seats installed.

It ran good, except for it doesn't start well. Once it starts it runs good. It is definately over propped with the 12x11 on it as it would only turn a little over 3000 rpms. We'll try it with the 12x8 next time.

What would make this start so hard, cold or hot?

Pictures are posted on page 4.

if you have enough wire length then you might not have to remount the regulator 180, but if you did they would be routed like they currently are.

Chris, that's a good idea, I'll check that out. I'd much rather install a normal size battery.

John, we're having a good time and it will be great to finally get this one together. We've had it 3 years this September. Next step is the alignment. It looks real good right now, but the whole engine appears to be up about 1/4".

Is there anything more dangerous about having the battery in that location rather in a remote location up front in the bildge?

if there isn't anything above the volt regulator, flip it 180 degrees and use the same mounting holes just with the plate going in the other direction than it currently is, instant clearance created.

What years was the 221 available?

This version of the motor was only made in the 144 , 170 , and 200 cu in version (at least here in the US ) The 250 cu in engine shares the same head, but will not "bolt in" , the bell housing pattern is different.

I have a 200 I would like to rebuild for mine ....ahhhhh, someday...

Its a version only made here I guess same engine with bigger bores. The 221 was the top of the line. smaller 170 and 188 cu were also available.
It equipped most of the cars and pick up produced from the 60 to the 90!! Falcon, Fairlane, F-100. This I-6 its as common here as your V-8.... The chevy I-6 is the 230 and 250cu.
And from dodge we had the slant 6...
Ford Argentina also offered a V-8 engine based on a Y block till end of the 70´s but it was rated around 160-180 hp, so the lighter I-6 221 rated 165 was more of a choice for local gear heads....
chevy officially never introduced a v-8 engine car in the market untill 2004 when they started selling here the 5.3 v-8 avalanche and then the zr06 vette in 2006 (144K they ask here new)!!!

Bruce,
No, but you may what to check out your bilge venting.

Seriously, I don't feel the location is worse. But, I'd go for under the seat because if the battery does out gas, it won't corrode wood but it may on the metal of the engine.
