water leak from driveshaft

How quikley is it coming in? Is it dripping or running in? How often is the bilge kicking in? Sounds like you might need to tighten or replace the packing or install a dripless one. But yes it is suppose to be dripping some.

thanks for the replies, I took the boat out again today, and pulled the trans inspection plate off from floor behind engine cover, I can turn the shaft, but the nut with the wire on it has water coming in from around it, how do you go about tighteneing this thing up, looks weird to me, I don't want to screw anything up, its running in not dripping, still doesn't fill up the bigle that fast, but I would like the leak to get down to a small drip, any help on what to turn and what not to turn will help alot, thanks

Yes, at least get your first name up in your profile. I feel once you stick around CCfan you'll see that in most cases we do respond with first names. I feel CCfan, unlike some sites, is really a close group and the reason first names are used. Don't worry, we're not out there fishing to get personal information!

Posting your location is great too. It's common for a fellow CCfan'r to run "down the road" to help someone out.

You'll also see that many members do stop by and visit other members. In some cases, these visits are first time face to face meetings. CCfan is a great group!

Try to plan on attending one of the reunions. They're another great opportunity to meet and enjoy the felloship of the members.

Tighten up the packing but do keep a eye on it. Too tight can actually do more damage by scoring up the shaft. If you can't get it down to 5 or 6 drips per minute, we'll get you through a repack.

Now that you've got the boat, (congratulations) get some picture and a story into Keith for the diaries.

    Usually is a snug tight. When I adjusted mine I did it the in the water. Using 1/8 increments until I got 5/6 drop per min, or 1 every 10 sec when the boat was in gear. Since then I replace with the Gore-tex and I had it set up for 1 drop per minute.
