I have an oil leak in the 89. symptoms are that it appears to be comming from the input shaft seal & leaking out into the bilge.
It's 1.23:1 tranny Researching here it seems that the tranny might be over pressurizing & forcing fluid past the seal. Is this the pump.? The delema I have is that there is no local CC dealer to me, and that my local ski boat agent isn't interested in looking at it. Is this something that I can repair myself or can I take it to an auto tranny specialist.? |

Andrew,
I know you're pretty handy so why don't you try to let Eric walk you through the rebuild. I'm sure he'll see the post and comment shortly - or rather tomorrow as he's probably at Rico's right now - It's Friday!! Don't take it to a automotive trans shop. They won't know what they were looking at!! The only thing in common between a auto trans ans a marine is the fluid in them. |

Thanks Pete,
Yes I was a little worried that an auto trans shop might not know too much about them, but if I can be stepped through it I'm sure I will be able to effect the repair. My tranny cooler does have a small water leak at the outer seam. It's only a slight drip. This just needs to br re soldered. This wouldn't be contributing to the problem.? |

It shouldn't as long as the leak is external and small. Does your trans fluid look ok? No water? I'd worry about the RWP sucking air at the leak more. Any cooling issues with the engine? Soldering them up can be a PITA because the copper at the leak has oxidized. Sometimes you need to pull the whole end off to get it cleaned up enough to take the solder. Try a acid flux first and of course make sure it washed up real good to get rid of any residual acid!! |

on the 1.23"s the front shafts will pit and cause a seal leak, highly unlikely the pump is bad. start with a seal and emory cloth the shaft, and install new seal

So it could just be the seal.?
I will pull the seal, emory the input shaft & replace the seal. It that correct.? |

Forgive me as I have sinned.!
I'm just going to get my local "cough" Malibu "cough" dealer fix it. I spoke with them about it and they mentioned that they see the same issue with their ZF transmissions on the mals. Seemed to think it would be a pretty straight forward / easy fix. I just don't have the time at the moment with current work commitments. I have a buyer keen on buying the 89 & I'm still trying to finish off the new trailer for it. |
