looks nice but for future refernce the factory would have used this type of paint which is only available in gallon quanities.

Its true that CC used Rustoleum paint for the lettering on the mid to late 70's boats. That may have spilled into the 80's as well since the stripes were painted until 84-85. The decals in question are the 87-89 variety though, and were originally vinyl. These are NLA so the accepted procedure is to paint them on now. Not sure if theres a Rustoleum color that matches the vinyl/gel colors from the late 80's or not. |

it's an industrial alkyd enamel, it took me a little to find it on there website back in the day and they've changed the site since then, the can is a little different too from when I bought it several years ago but I did get it from Grainger's

Chris,
Looking at the Grainger catalog, there are four series of alkyd enamels. The only one with a different lable is the V6400 "Industrial Choice". Maybe that's the one you were referring to. |

well it only comes in gallons for the correct paint so one gallon should do about three or four boats easy. If your's is safty blue I might be able to spare some provided what I have left is still good.
Back when I did repaint mine I did call CC and got the info and then talked to rustoleum and they where who directed me to the specific type of paint As I wanted to hold true to Pete and the Orginal theme, But I do see rustoleum has a topsider paint now that they didn't back then and I'm sure there are other brands and types of paint that would work just fine and look the same. |

Chris,
So you used the "DTM" (direct to metal). I never thought too highly of the paint. Always thought of it as being a "quick and dirty" method for a contractor to skip the primer. We have used the stuff here at work but notice rust has started to bleed through. However, since it's made to stick to metal without a primer then I would think it would stick to glass as well. Plus, you won't have a rust issue with fiberglass!! Was this DTM recommended? I think most are just going to the hardware and getting a quart off the shelf. In this case Rustoleum "Safety Blue". Adhesion problems haven't been mentioned yet!! You are correct that the DTM has a blue label in place of the standard alkyd's red. |

Pete I would have to check the can that I have over in the barn, Like I said it looks like they changed it from when I bought mine, I don't recall the DTM being on the label but it was for concrete and metal and I questioned them about that and they said no problem above the water line. Without looking at the can of paint for the exact info but what I recall is industrial Alkyd enamel paint, pretty thick stuff and it needs to be thinned out to use and have it look good.
But if I was doing it today I would just use topsider paint mask it off and spray it. Might pick Allen's brain he repainted his about the same time and I thought he used Rustoleum as well. |

As far as masking, I would use 3M's tape called the Edge. Blue painters tape gives no better hard-edge than masking tape. But I don't know anything and I'm Chinese.

the fine line tape works excelent,kind of a shame to cover it up with a pinstripe.. as for the paint its just rustoleum,with a hardner and thinner added..scuffed up with 320..

Shawn, Glad you used the fine line tape. You're correct it is good stuff! Looks like you used the 4737 because of the blue color. It's their vinyl "fine line". Any reason for picking that type?
