Actually Pete, I've already got the wood scarfed and ready to glue up. I want to prestain the new, "whiter" mahogany to match the existing stripped wood before I glue the joint.
After doing this, I noticed there are actually butt and scarfed joints on the boat?

Bruce,
Your floor looks really nice-for someone that says their not a woodworker!
How are you going to finish the interior sides? Were they spatter painted? My daughter just did that to their old boat.

Steve, Thanks, we winged the floor as we didn't have a pattern. I couldn't believe how good it fit. It took all day just to make those 4 floor panels.

I have side panels, but they're moldy and won't clean up. I decided to paint the sides for now as that is how the original boats came without the optional side panels. We're putting a white vinyl floor down and I'm going to try to get a nice fit right to the hull so it'll look really clean.

Steve,
CC used scarfed hull sides/bottoms and butt blocking on their decks. I've never looked at a Higgins real close?? Pre seal (or reduced varnish) the new ply too before you glue it in.

Im not sure, but did they spatter paint the side in some of these boats? Heres a pic of my daughters first attempt at it...

this was with the gray base paint and the first coat of white spatter. She needs to go over this with black spatter. She should have done more practice runs, has a few runs, but not too bad for first attempt.

This is a link I found on How to spatter paint

I can see it now.... the white base, a green spatter to match your hull, then a little gray or black spatter on top...

I see what you mean by splatter paint, like the old car trunks.

Correct Craft painted them with a solid, similar color as the hull. My Mustang was painted where the side panels didn't cover. I got a decent matching oil paint from Ben Moore. If I like the look, I may leave it like that to cut down on weight. With the 6 banger, it's going to need all the help it can get.

Here's a pic out of the ref section.

We finally got the bugs worked out of the engine and it is running good and in the boat. Hopefully, this boat will be in the water by Memorial Day.

Awesome Bruce. Are we going to get to see you at Green Lake then?

What did you ever do about your fuel tank? I am going to have to address that in the SN. I have the Long Cruise 18 gal. but I am afraid it is shot.

BoatDr found someone 7 miles from my house that knows engines and seems to have a fondness for Y blocks and Dearbos. Small world, I used to work with his wife. He thought he knew what was wrong with it before he even saw it. He was right. There's a little disc that goes in the shifter assembly that is easy to reverse. It really doesn't look any different when it's upsidedown, but it won't work right. It was runni9ng good today when we picked it up. I had him drop it in the boat. Major accomplishment. That engine's been out of the boat almost 2 years.

Mike, I'm not sure about Green Lake this year. I believe I bought the last Tempo fuel tank after they were bought by Mueler. Mueler make the same tank, but put the fill in the center. I may try to use our old one if it's still good, just because it's easier to install.

I thought it looked good when you first got it Bruce, you've really have done a great job.

Mike, maybe you could have one of those new tanks reworked,it would be better than starting from scratch.

is that really the way the battery cable routes? seems like it's not going to be too long before it welds it's self to the motor.

No, the battery cables and the outboard motor fuel line are just thrown over the engine and tucked in for travel. I've got to figure out where to put the battery. I'm relocating it from under the driver's seat. 1st choice is next to the voltage regulator on the port side like some of the older boats were done, if there's enough room. 2nd choice is under the floor in front of the front seats.

What years was the 221 available?

This version of the motor was only made in the 144 , 170 , and 200 cu in version (at least here in the US ) The 250 cu in engine shares the same head, but will not "bolt in" , the bell housing pattern is different.

I have a 200 I would like to rebuild for mine ....ahhhhh, someday...

Steve, you have a different bracket for your voltage regulator that puts it up high and out of the way. Mine is down by the battery. I've got a V8 engine box, but still have less room to work with. I may be able to do it with a Group 29NF battery which is only 5.5" wide.

Is there anything more dangerous about having the battery in that location rather in a remote location up front in the bildge?

Bruce,
No, but you may what to check out your bilge venting.

Seriously, I don't feel the location is worse. But, I'd go for under the seat because if the battery does out gas, it won't corrode wood but it may on the metal of the engine.

Its a version only made here I guess same engine with bigger bores. The 221 was the top of the line. smaller 170 and 188 cu were also available.
It equipped most of the cars and pick up produced from the 60 to the 90!! Falcon, Fairlane, F-100. This I-6 its as common here as your V-8.... The chevy I-6 is the 230 and 250cu.
And from dodge we had the slant 6...
Ford Argentina also offered a V-8 engine based on a Y block till end of the 70´s but it was rated around 160-180 hp, so the lighter I-6 221 rated 165 was more of a choice for local gear heads....
chevy officially never introduced a v-8 engine car in the market untill 2004 when they started selling here the 5.3 v-8 avalanche and then the zr06 vette in 2006 (144K they ask here new)!!!

if there isn't anything above the volt regulator, flip it 180 degrees and use the same mounting holes just with the plate going in the other direction than it currently is, instant clearance created.

Chris, that's a good idea, I'll check that out. I'd much rather install a normal size battery.

John, we're having a good time and it will be great to finally get this one together. We've had it 3 years this September. Next step is the alignment. It looks real good right now, but the whole engine appears to be up about 1/4".

if you have enough wire length then you might not have to remount the regulator 180, but if you did they would be routed like they currently are.
