Guys - I searched for info on best rope to use but didn't get anything specific.
I don't want to use a cotton rope due to mildew concern. I got a sample of polypropylene braided rope, but it is very soft, looks like it will pill easily, & does not retain well in the rubrail groove. Searching the 'net, it looks like I should get 'twisted polyester' rope.(sounds like a punk disco band!) Is this the best choice? I couldn't find a source other than 500ft length. Any advice is apreciated. Chris |

Chris, I replaced the rope in my Tique rub rail with a 50' twisted poly rope from Home Depot. I was planning to do the same on the BFN. If you cant find the right size locally (I think yours takes 5/8"?) then N3boatworks or another dealer should be able to get it for you.

Chris, I did my 88' last fall with rope I got from Lowes. So far so good on it holding up. I put the boat in the hot sun fo a couple of hours before starting the installation and was able to pop the new rope in with my fist. Don't throw away your old toothbrush. Use it to clean the channel real good before you put in the new rope as mine was a science project in the making.

Chris (Storm)- just in case you didnt measure, the Tique uses the smaller rub rail, which takes a 1/2" rope. Our BFN uses the larger one, which looks to be the same as the 87+ SN's... I *think* the rope is 5/8" but havent pulled ours out yet.

I used the braided nylon/polyester 5/8" rope on mine went in easy held up great was able to get it in a blue and white color to match the boat looked much better the the twisted rope that was in it.

So, no one's tryed the "Glo-in-the-Dark rope yet?
Changed mine last year 1/2" White twist Nylon, 18.00 and change, just the other day I noticed it went up to 26.00 and change for 50 feet. (Lowes) |

I do have a use for the rope that I took out.
My neighbor just bought a 1990 Stingray 250 MerCruiser. (Tow-rope) I can almost smell the phone calls already. |

Back to the serious side -- I took the rub rail off. Somebody had sealed up the gap with silicone seal so I dug all that out (tedious). I resealed the gap with 3M 4200, along with all the holes & rivet heads (some were pulled through).
We remounted the rub rail, using the old screw holes. Got 1 side done & it looked terribly wavy. I pulled it back off before the 4200 fully cured. Looking a White Lake website, it looks like new rub rail runs about $500. Haven't budgeted for that. Any chance that the old rub rail will go on straighter if I drill new holes? I was thinking of putting some short 5/8 rods in it to help hold it straight during mounting. I will need new inside screw-backer plastic, it is now pretty torn up (maybe that was the problem) - any idea if I could buy that somewhere separately? |

I am guessing you guys are talking about the rubber pieace that runs around the boat.. Right?
I have a black rubber one that runs around and would like to upgrade to the one with the rope inside the black rubber. How do you install, and take off the old one? Is it just as simple cut and pull method? What kinda glue do you use, and who can you order this from? Any advice from the pros would be great.. Thanks Lee

Al - Yes, I tightened the screws pretty good. Now that you mention it,I think that may be the problem. I was thinking the inner plastic strip, which is now in about 20 pcs, was supposed to keep it straight. Does that inner strip provide any stiffness or just act as a spacer for the rope? If I need to replace it I will have to get resourceful to find a substitute.
Lee - Post a photo of the rubrail you have now & maybe we can help. You probably have one with a vinyl insert - if so that can be pryed out with a screwdriver. Then you can take out all the screws to remove the moulding. I am still trying to figure out how best to remount it though! |

Al (Dr CC) - Thanks for your advice. I limited the torque when we remounted the rub rail & only tightened the screws up to the point of good contact. That, coupled with oversizing the holes in the rubrail so it could be finessed, helped a bunch. I really didn't want to drill a new set of holes in the hull - it had 2 sets already.
The rubrail isn't as straight as I would like, but good enough. It probably wasn't straight before I took it off - once you get to looking at something it draws your eye right to the imperfection! Funny, the rail is about now 2 inches shorter than when it came off. The material must have shrunk over the years. The end cap covers up the gap so it isn't a problem. Mission accomplished. |

just wondering...can the plastic tube that was in my 96 be replaced with a real rope? i never liked the idea of going away from the real rope when they went to the plastic stuff, just did not look right in my mind. old school perhaps.

I did my 84 and it was horrible. I made a special tool out of wood that pried the rub rail apart while someone else slipped the rope in. The older boats, the rubber is less pliable. So to open it up to put in a new rope was less fun. Lots of dawn soap and my little wooden tool and it start to slip right in. I could have taken the rail off, but i didnt want the chance the screws didnt go back in not aligned straight, etc. Post some pics!
I also wondered if you could take out the rubber insert (Like my 92) and put a rope one in and what it would look like. Be kind of cool |
