Sometimes I just can't believe how this site and the members have really interacted with my life. Yes, it truly is a family. I know of no other site like it!!
I got a very pleasant email today from Alan Arrighi (81nautique) regarding a problem I'm having with my 95 diesel Suburban. I may not have a tow vehicle to get my Atom to GL! Alan came out of the "blue" and offered me to use his Jeep Liberty!!! Yup, it wasn't even solicited! -- fantastic!!! Here's the problem that Alan does know via some emails I've been having. My truck has been "stumbling" for almost 6 months. Almost like it's getting air. New lift pump on the frame rail and new fuel supply/return lines. No difference. It will run down the road for several hundred miles and then decide to quit!! New injector pump and ECM just over a year ago. Then, it would trip the "check engine" light. Now none!! The thing has only got the OBD version #1 so no real decent data comes out of the ECM. It's been over at my diesel mechanic now since Tues. when it really "crapped" out on me, and OF COURSE, it starts and runs fine!!! I certainly hope its' not another Injector pump!! He's putting a clear fuel line in the supply and taping it to the windshield to look for air bubbles. he's also hooking up his reader and driving it all weekend to see if maybe it stumbles and the reader picks up something??? BTW, The little Hyundaye (sp?) rent a car I'm driving doesn't have a trailer hitch on it. Damn!!!! |

Eric,
The turbo is ok. I pulled the intake hose the other day and it spins great and no radial play. It's about the only thing you can do to check them. Since the stumble is just like turning the ignition key on and off rapidly (not a gradual loss of power), my diesel guy is thinking more in line with another electrical issue. If the stumble is real bad, the engine will die but if I'm rolling down the highway I can slip it in neutral and restart it. (key to "off" not required) The injector pump is running on a after market fuel driver module. Stanidyne was having nothing but problems with their early versions so the after market went in years ago. It may be a good direction to look at as there are issues with the after market units too. Ironically the firm I work for is a Stanidyne supplier of some of their stampings. We make literally tons of small metering orifices for their pumps. Every time I have a issue with my diesel, there's alway some smart ass at work that tells me the problem is due to the bad, out of tolerance reject parts we ship them!! |

Roger, here we go again with the "English to English" translation issue! The "immobilizer" on a diesel is the fuel driver module which basically shuts down the source of the fuel shutting down the engine. The ignition key switch question did come up with my mechanic but since I only have one key on it, a problem with it was discounted. People who have lots of weight on their key chains have done damage to the ignition switch. The weight and the bumps/vibration going down the road wears out the switch contacts! We'll have to work on some translations this weekend! |

Yes but that switch and module are 15years old and I have found that late 80's 90's electrics are not as good as older parts, I know I'm going to get well chain pulled the way I speak and name things, looking forward to learn American English.

Come on Eric - "F" word as in Ford????? Tom (horkn) would love you to say it!! I still have confidence in the GM product I'm driving. Now, if he finds the problem and get's it back to me fixed by this Thursday is a different story!! BTW, you do know it's the "Hummer" 5.7 engine I'm dealing with!! |

Ford ownership concept is pretty simple. Buy a Ford, own it until the warranty is about to run out and trade it for another Ford.

Pete i was a diehard fan of GM diesels, had four of them over the years.
Two years gone and i'm still afraid to add up all the receipts on the '96. Too bad you have an automatic and need the computer, else just throw a '93 DB4 mechanical pump and spring wastegate and drive the eff out of it. Those engine were fabulous when they were 2-wire engines, but '94 up just too fragile of engine management and injection systems. All it takes a bit of debri on the optical encoder and bam, new pump time. Big monkey off your back when you finally let that one go, big relieve not dreading the SES light or sudden loss of all power, steering and brakes. I know, they run great when they run, and not everybody needs a 400hp monster that appears to be the only alternative now. But we'll talk you down....let it goo..... |

Tom,
I'd love a new Suburban but it's not in the cards at this point. I don't need a $500 - $600 a month car loan at this point. With the economy and me doing the shop up north (BTW good time to build - good deals out there) its' not something I want to undertake. Yes, it is too bad that the computer runs the automatic!! I'd go for the mechanical pump real fast. My diesel mechanic would too!!! Any feedback on how the Duramax is holding up? I've heard pretty decent. There were some rumors floating that GM was toying with the idea of sticking them in the Suburbans but with the same trans (largest trans they make) I have in mine. The Allison won't fit. I understand they get the Allison in the HD's by using a frame to body lift and I've noticed that - the HD's are a couple inches higher. |

Have you driven an 07 or later Tundra with the 5.7L Engine and six speed transmission? Looks like Toyota wants to get into the diesel market too. They have been talking about this since for a few years. I think the problem is getting the emissions in check and finding a market in this economy. 4.5l-diesel-tundra-confirmed-bigger-diesel-coming Pete- I'm glad you were able to find a tow vehicle to pull that beautiful Atom to GL, I'm really looking forward to seeing that one. |

And we all know you have rode your share of "Mopeds" Chris. I don't believe you, because a moped is the last thing I would compare the Tundra to. The Tundra will reach 60MPH in 6 seconds and run the 1/4 mile in 14.6 seconds. Not bad for a 5,600 lb. vehicle. I smoke Fords and Chevy's all the time on my commute to and from work. |

I had a couple thoughts, but you have probably already gone over it.
I know algae will grow in diesel tanks if fuel sits for any amount of time. I have never had a problem, but I put a ton of miles on. I have heard of people getting the pick up tubes plugged from algae and debris from years of use. This fuel is a lot different compared to just a few years ago. Not a fun job to drop the tank, but may be worth checking out. The other is a cam position sensor. I know on PowerStrokes they will kill the engine while driving or sometimes just won't start. When mine died, my tach wouldn't read and revs while cranking. Replaces CPS and away we went for years. It can be a spuratic problem or it will just leave you dead on the road. I am not a chevy 6.5 guru, but I thought I would throw in my $.02 worth. Hey Randy, our boats won't win the speed race on the lake, but if you want to race that rice burner against the oil burner....lets play! I'll even leave my boat hooked up! Just knockin you around a bit! |

I just got a call from my diesel mechanic. He's the third mechanic who's worked on the problem and of course he can't get it to act up ether!!! Plus, no codes are showing up on his reader. He's also the one who put the new injector pump and ECM in it about 14 months ago. What he is going to try is to disconnect the fuel driver module that came with the new pump and hook it up to the old remote mounted module that's still on the engine from a previous repair. It was still good when the injector pump was replaced. It may then give him some idea of a direction to head. I sure hope so!! His only other choice would be the new pump route again. So, for now it's back in the truck and out of the Hyundia.

Todd,
The algae issue was discounted along with the fuel lines sucking air someplace. What he does is tie in a piece of clear fuel line and tapes it to the winshield. Then he can monitor the fuel while driving. No bubbles!! He really didn't think it was a air issue anyway. He said if it was, then the engine would lose power gradually. This stutter is just like turning the key on and off rapidly. Sometimes even staying running. Other times when it has completely died but a shift to neutral and then a restart. It's also a daily user so it gets fresh fuel every couple of weeks. (42 gal. tank) Thanks for the idea though. |

For those who may be curious and may not know, I made it to GL, back and have been driving the diesel all week without a issue. To recap what my diesel guy did, he disconnected the 14 month old fuel solenoid driver that came with the injector pump at that time and plugged into a remote mounted unit that was still on the truck from a previous repair. Stanadyne has had nothing but problems with these things. The 14 month old unit wasn't their latest and greatest improved version. The latest is encapsulated in a softer compound and won't crack when subjected to the heat down in the valley plus they went to gold plated contacts on the harness and module. He told me to drive it connected to the remote module and call him next week. Then he'll put the latest updated one in. He hasn't had a failure yet with the new Stanadyne version but has had the remote aftermakets units go on him. Then I'll be able to get another 100K out of it!!
