I am a diesel mechanic by day (correct craft repairmen by nite) and it sounds to me like your mechanic is headed in the right direction. While I haven't worked on the 6.5s for awhile it seems like he must know what his doing. All the steps are the sme ones I would have taken. We live about 20 miles from GL and still didn't get there this year. On fri. I was actually by Big Green and meet some of the ccs headed there that was a tough one as I was on a work trip that I couldn't get away from. Hope you burb is running better.

Tom,
Thanks for the words of encouragement. Yes, I do believe my diesel guy has been around the block several times with the 6.5's!!! I actually think he's developed a close relationship with the people at Stanadyne!!

Make sure you plan ahead next year for GL. We'd love to have you join us.

Eric,
Sounds like you're going into economy mode big time. What's up with the head?

belt snapped, apparently probably bent the valves....the guy sent the head out already and is wrapped in plastic....he pulled the engine to do the repair and i guess it seems like he is clueless on assembly.
a good friend of mine is a 30 year VW mechanic on fresh retirement and the days he spends at home with the wife must be miserable because he wants to get out and stay busy...I'll probably let him loose on it and he has all the special tools...if not, I'll buzz it together when i get a chance...
i do have a golf, it just hit 190,000 i do alot of my service work out of it, with 190 on it I still find myself driving it daily at 90 mph back and forth with one finger on the steering wheel...I always wonder why i fly by cars that look like they are sitting still

remember back when I snapped the belt on the Passat? I sent those bent valves to somebody on the site, I wonder what they ever did with them?

I read some of the thread here to know of your Suburban problem. My dad has a 96 GMC Suburban that would occasionally die on him, then usually start right up and go for miles without a problem. When he took it in for an emmisions test it failed even though there was no check engine light illuminated. After thinking it was the ignition switch harness, computer, plugs etc. I finally figured out the problem. Turns out it was corrosion between the two positive battery cables at the battery. One cable runs to the starter and the other to the power distribution center, a build up of corrosion between them would give an intermittent voltage drop, it would also erase the test codes from the computers memory which then caused it to fail the emmission test. Pretty strange problem as you could not see any corrosion, check your cables and maybe that will be the problem. Good Luck -

Greg,
Thanks for the suggestion but you really can't compare a diesel to a gas. My doubled up cable at the one battery is for cranking and there isn't a smaller wire going to a distribution point from that battery terminal. As mentioned, I did a repair to it with a bolt on cable end (with both 2/0 cables under one clamp!!!!) I'll see how long it lasts?? If it doesn't, I'll need to do some serious cable work with new lugs/terminals.

The F word. LOL

Pete, did you get your diesel fixed? I hope so, becasue car issues are nothing fun. My farming cousins and uncles all used to swear by GM's. Then they got the 6.whateverl v8 GM diesel bug and those trucks always let them down. One cousin that is into the tractor pull deal ended up getting a PSD ford.

Isuzu finally fixed GM's issues of not being able to make a good diesel by throwing an isuzu in the GM' trucks and calling it "duramax".

Some red white and blue die hards still are not aware that the duramax is a jap crap motor. LOL

I like my yota's too. Nothing toy like on them at all. We have 92k of totally trouble free towing and other abuse on our 04 4.7 v8 4runner.

Heck, in the 80's, their axles and transfer cases were built better than many full size domestic HD trucks were. And these parts were on compact pick ups.
