I think NECC was claiming that he had the original prototype 176 with a GT40, not the original prototype 176. After all, the boat is a 1998! BHP, heres a '96 for sale in Iowa: http://classifiedresults.com/1996-ski-nautique-176/ |

Thanks Tim, That is what I was claiming...Since the 176 came out in 96. I found a stand alone CC brochure for the 176 in my archives and they had the boat nationally advertised at $18,500.00 with standard features no trailer. |

I have the 1996 brochure in front of me! It does not show the 176? As far as I can tell it was 1997 Ski Nautique 176 and in 1998 it was the Air Tique and nothing for 1999?

I think he meant that the 176 brochure was separate from the Nautique line catalog. |

The 1996 176 came out after the 1996 all model brochure was printed thus the reason for the stand alone brochure that I have. ![]() |

I wonder how many of the 176's were made between 1996 and 1998?
If I had one, that would be something I would want to know! Also, how many had the stronger GT40 engines! |

I have seen 2 1996 SN 176's with GT-40's so I'm not sure how a 1998 model can be a prototype if they had been making them 2 yrs before that?

Yea! like I said in an earlier post the ProtoType is in Orlando.
Back when we came out with the boat I installed everything from a standard 5.8 and including a GT-40 also acouple of manifestations of Chevy and even set a Python in it just to see if the bigblock motor box would fit. I even set a Lightning motor in one but was not givin the time to test it. So any one can believe what they want and promote their boat the way they like if it makes them feel better. |

Looked at a nice 176 last night. It was a '96 model with a goofy back seat in it.
All stock. I know these sold for 18.5K when new..... Can't seem to get an idea of what they are selling for used. Tim |

Nice to see other SN176/Air Tique owners! I purchased my '99 Air Tique last summer, and through the contacts and info provided by CCFan I have been working dilligently to get it up to par. The wet sanding and buffing is done (that was work!), and the black gel-coat stripe now gleams as does the rest of the hull. Woody helped with parts, along with fantastic assistance from White Lake for replacement stickers. It heads off to Christine's next month for a full interior replacement.
All this to say that I love the boat, and after a few pulls, the lake neighbors are envious of the wake, saying it's the nicest slalom wake they've ever skied behind (these guys are serious short liners). At wakeboard speeds, it puts up plenty of height for this recreational wakeboarding family. It runs great, is quite efficient, and I can see no need for more than the 270HP it provides through the 351W, giving me about 44mph wide open. Thanks for the info on the rudder - that's good stuff. ![]() Behindpropeller: I paid 10K in a better economy whne the boat had less than 300 hrs on it. The boat only had cosmetic needs, and I put in new carb and steering cable. All in I will have invested about $13K bringing it to like new condition. Good luck - I hope you find one. |

Thats interesting. I was just looking for this rudder again to upgrade mine. Finally got the boat out again after its long winter, and was looking for the 11a rudder again. Would like to here more about this before I continue looking.

I am new to the forum. Just picked up a 1996 176. Went to change out the stainless steel rudder for the current 11a replacement rudder and noted that the shaft size on the new rudder was bigger then the stainless steel rudder.
Would replacing the port be the next option? If so is that fairly easy to do? I wonder if the hole pattern on the new port would match up with the current rudder port. I surly don't want to do anything to the hull to accommodate a new port. Any help would be much appreciated. |

Ken,
Welcome to CCfan. Glad you joined in to a fantastic group. Yes, a larger port will be needed. You may have to epoxy fill the old mounting holes. When bedding in the new port, I recommend using 3M 4200 adhesive sealant. Why the change? You don't like the SS fabricated rudder? Now the next question is one we ask all new members - we need pictures!! ![]() |

Correct, you need the other port. You can also pull yours out and have a machine shop bore your current one out. |

Thanks for your quick and helpful response. Have only been in the boat a short while. It didn't seem to turn as well as a 1999 Moomba Outback that I have. I read through the discussions on this forum and thought it would be good to change out the rudder. So today I ordered a new rudder port to match the new rudder. Can't wait to try her out once all is installed. Thanks again.

Here is an update. Pulled the rudder port that went with the small stainless steel rudder. The new port to accommodate the newer version of the 11A rudder would not fit through the hole in the hull. The bolt pattern was identical so that was not a problem. I had to enlarge the hole in the hull to allow for the new port to fit. Not something I really wanted to do but felt as though I needed to press on. The hole was not a perfect laser cut circle but it was a reasonably good tight fit and I used plenty of the 5200 3M sealant. Looked good once all was done. Probably would not have undertaken all of this if I had a lick of sense but I hope the end result is lake worthy and steers like a champ.

Ken,
I'm curious as to what method you used to enlarge the hole in the hull? I'm also glad you didn't take the route that was mentioned about boring the exiting port. I sure would have been concerned with the wall thickness remaining but the even bigger problem may have been getting the packing to fit. |

I hate to say it but I used a dremmel and went around the edges of the hole that was there. I didn't have a hole saw but I doubt I could have lined it up great anyway. I talked with the guys at Nautique Parts/ White Lake marine and they told me that is what they would have done if they had the job to do (surly not the dremmel use but the principal of enlarging the hole). I believe that the finished hole that I ended up with was fine. Sure am glad for the 3M sealant though. I was surprised that the outside diameter of the two ports was not the same. The new port is significantly more stout.

I do wish the outside diameters had matched. Then it would have made for a pleasant swap of the ports. Not sure why the difference. The hole wasn't caked up with caulk etc. The new port OD is a little over an 1/8 inch or so larger. The 176 that I have has a hull ID that shows it was made in 1995. Not sure if they changed things around as they got more into production. I'll see about posting some pictures although it will be hard to do a side by side comparison now that one is installed.
