i have an 88 barefoot and the rudder has some play when you grab it and move it back and forth. I pulled the entire assembly out and the packing looks bad but there is still place between the rudder and the through hull sleeve. is this normal or do i buy a new rudder and assembly. thanks,   also any idea what size packing for the rudder and drive shaft for the boat thansk   jared   boston

Jared,
Just re pack the rudder log. It will tighten it up. The log and rudder stem were never a precision fit.

Use 1/4 & 3/16 drill bits as gage pins to find out how much clearance there is between the gland nut & the shaft. I think both 3/16 & 1/4 were used off & on, so you need to measure to make sure you order the correct size.
