Hey All,

I changed my first oil yesterday and everything went very easy. Only one almost huge problem, I didn't see that the old O ring was still on the engine block. When I went to put the new filter on I saw something move and it was the old O ring. That would have been a real problem.

Now the next question is that the bow lifting ring needs some work. The 2 small approximately 1 inch screws on either side of the ring are stripped. When I pulled the 2 screws out the lifting ring seems fairly secure but moves about 1/8 inch when turning it clockwise and counter clockwise.

I would like to have this a little more secure as I am planning on using the ring to clip the cables for a barefooot pole.

Any suggestions?

I have the same problem with mine, they were just fine for lifting though.

A barefoot booms cables goes to the bow eye in the stem and not the lifting ring.

The cable for a extended pylon goes to a strap around the stem and not the lifting ring. You'll end up with more damage than just loose screws going to the lifting ring.

Vertical lift only on lifting rings. The aft lifting ring is the same.

Epoxy fill the holes and drill new pilot holes.

I need to replace the bracket at the bottom of the bow lifting ring which has corroded quite badly. Any advice on resecurring it to the hull?

This has happened on 3 out of 3 oil changes I've done on my boat. They always tell you working on cars to check for this, but I've done probably hundreds of oil changes on cars and it maybe happened once in all those times.

These 351s like to hold onto their old oil filter gaskets for some reason.

Brent,
You really haven't said much about the condition of your boats stringers. With a boat of it's age and if they haven't been changed, there's bound to be issues. I'm bringing this up because lifting ring anchoring is very important and there can be problems - we've seen it but mostly on the aft ring. Even though it's rare to get water way up to the bow, you still need to be real careful. CC always went with the cheapest thing they could find and you are seeing it. Pictures would be great showing the extent of the corrosion. I'm worried about the fasteners into the stem.

I agree regarding the gasket. It only had to happen to me once and I'll never forget to check it again. Scary

You would have to grind out any remaining bits of the old bracket, then fiberglass a new one in.
