Seth....Just like the public worker unions in Wisconsin, why can't the fine union members of Verizon kick in a little bit for thier own healthcare and retirement. I guess we quickly found out how much power the union has. They got their arses back to work under the old deal. And....if they don't like their jobs, maybe they should look elsewhere. I like your idea on that.
Dave....A few kernels of truth?? Come on, these liberals must be getting to you and clouding your judgement. That whole story, while admittedly long-winded, was packed with many truths of exactly how the left operates in this country. |

It is all so clear now. ??????????????????? Why is the right so quick to take the side of "big business"? Last year Verizon had a net profit of 1.61 billion. Let that sink in a bit. 1,600,000,000,.00 The middle of this country has stepped up and paid, shared the burden, what ever you want to call it. And you advocate for taking more from them? You HATE the ideas of more taxes. But on the other hand, let the corporations do the damage, and you will help the corporations take it from the middle. You do not even know what you said about the Verizon situation. Have you any knowledge about it, any? You are right about your statement about Verison workers going back to work, under the old deal. BUT. It was Verizon who wanted to change the deal, workers stood up, went on strike, and now Verizon is going to take any change a little slower and have talks before action is taken. |

im waiting on figures and shady pubby deals to get their hands on some of the sweet crude over there in Libya, im sure we will be dumping a couple billion into their economy to rebuild that shhit hole. why dont we ever hear about Africa, Canada, Australia ever being in turmoil?
everybody works for someone usually to generate a profit to flourish, why is it so hard to understand that the US government operates on the same philosophy? the need revenue, yeah I hate paying taxes, but i hate dropping 2 hundies at the grocery store too, its what makes the world go round and round, its happening at the local level and maybe its bait and switch and you just dont realize it...were all old enough to remember not paying for sports back in school, now you pay out of pocket. read your local paper, does it talk about hiring 20 new cops, no, not really, its talking about lay-offs but one does not pay attention. trickle down works both ways. i really dont want to wait around for the government to run out of money. we really do live in a big bubble and never think that this could never happen to us and there are alot of good indicators showing what happens when governments run out of money. the only way the government can sustaine is by revenue, and their revenue is generating via taxes |

Eric, I don't get you in this section. Our gov't takes in tons of money, and if politicians would stop buying votes with our money we'd have a handsome surplus.

I work on a guys boat, no pun but straight from Oklahoma, and to give you an idea of what he knows about boats is i asked him what rpm the boat was running at and he answered "at the 50 mark" which to me and you means 5000 rpm at wot.
anyways, my 1st grader has a better vocabulary than him, on a Saturday on OT, he clips them for 65.00 an hour,he works for the power company, I handed him a bill and his jaw dropped, how, why, the typical BS i charged him my full rate at 85.00 an hour and the MFER questioned it, im trying to think of the hidden meassage here, im like look, in order for me to sustaine and provide a service i need 13k a month to break even, that means i have to generate 20k a month to pay my bills, this bulding aint free these lights arent free, im not free......so tell me why you deserve 65 bucks an hour? (and he probably stands around for half the day) |

And if you weren't handing the gov't a pile of money each quarter for them to mostly waste, think how much easier you'd breathe. And so I'm not taken out of character, I enjoy helping others; I just don't want to be told to at the point of a gun. |

I look at vote buying, handshakes and swaying contracts as a necessary evil, as long as that money stays inside our borders and re-circulating it back into the economy. give me a milly, and i am going shopping, I will put that doe right back out there until im rubbing 2 nickels together. what would happen if someone handed you a milly?

It does to the democrats, Keepeing them just poor enough bus an ever expaanding voting pool. Which does no favor to the poor. they remain poor for ever. the part that bugs me is they are mistreating the poor and buying votes with MY money, i could give it to programs that lft the poor out of poverty if the governmnet did not take it out of my hands first. As a flooring contracctor I can sell a customer flooring at a variety of prie and quality levels. I will not let them buy garbage that will not serve them, I get them good quality products at the best price I can. I mark up products 10% to cover my sales time, the industry typically marks up 30%. I can make more money by marking up more or selling more expensive products, but when I take money from someone I owe it to them to be responsible with it and not squander it. i believe this and I am a evil for profit private corporation. This is all i expect from our so called "public servants". Government blows money like it came from a monopoly board, and the answer is not to give them more of it. they need to be put on a budget like the rest of us. |

Seth, by your reasoning verizon should pay its workers more because it is profitable. If this is true what should the states and federal government do when they opperate at a deficit? What about when the auto industry is loosing money? Is there any circumstance where you should take a pay cut? If the answer is no, you have a myopic view. I can see both sides, I look at verizons profits but also how many they employ. If they make no profit then they will shut their doors, and then everyone currently bennifiting from their existance goes on unemploymen. Profit is not evil. it is part of free enterprise and has given this country the wealth it enjoys.

These programs that lift the poor out of poverty?.....
I love how the poor get the shaft in this conversation. Say nothing of the cost of war, or the amount of money on security for this nation wasted needlessly. I am a Marine, and I saw it everyday. And what a load insinuating poor people vote democrat.... The poor southern half have a God, guts, and guns mentality (or lack of), that closely models the far right. |

Dave,
It used to work that way, it was called profit sharing. That isn't what the Verzion strike was all about but whatever. So you think the employee should get the pay cut in a profit loss? Ok, you own a business. Say you have an employee, and he is perfect in all ways. Several of your accounts go past due and the business is not paid. Now you cannot make payroll. Should the employee get the pay cut to make up the difference in your projected profits? No! You do, you are the owner, it is your neck not his. His work was good, and he did what he was hired for. ********************************************************* I can though, see some instances where pay cuts are necessary to maintain employment. But arbitrarily, making large significant cuts, like in the case of Verizon, where there IS profit, no that is wrong. ********************************************************* I guess the way I ran my company was different, I gained more than my employees, because I had more of a risk. However, I was always able to make payroll. If I was slow for a month or two, I paid my help the same, even if that meant paying from my own pocket. Had that continued, yeah, I would have had to make a decision. Hey, I just agreed with you. Don't get used to it. |

You are talking of poverty and you seem to worry about them quite a bit. I dont mind helping them folks out, our country is great like that. But what are half of welfare folks on, what do poor folks do when you flip em 5 at a light. You think they really have a agenda to get out of the poverty life. Hell no! Boozers, loosers, dont want to work anyways. When you give em the 5, straight to the store for booze or to the dealers house.
I think the next pubby that gets elected, fix this welfare crap. Everyone can get on it but high stipulations and DRUG TESTS to being on welfare. I guranntee that over half of peps on welfare are on the ***************g crak pipe when they are suppose to buy food, shoes, diapers for the babys but they dont care. |

One of many in Minnesota is a company called Newgate. A self supporting non-profit. They are a teaching facility, they take in donated cars, teach at risk inner city kids how to repair them,(the kids get paid while in the program) then they sell the repaired cars to working single moms at a significantly below market value. Way better than giving someone a welfare check to sit home doing nothing. We are always asking the rich to do more or do their share, why is it we cant ask the poor to better themselves in exchange for welfare. Why can't they clean parks, or work on each others homes, like habitat for humanity requires. If they dont want to learn and contribute they can take less. |

Seth, I wont get used to it but it is kind of nice now and then. Verizon has many divisions each has performance expectations, while Verizon is profitable overall they own some phone utilities that are old school wires on poles. The guys that maintain the lines are the ones with issues. Unfotunatly that particular industry is in decline. People are dumping hard wired phones for internet phone and cell service. Providers are having to drop prices to compete, and the infrastructure is aging and needing more repair. This is a dying industry. I would not be surprised if someone told me new developments will no longer be wired for telephone service in the near future. It can all be handled with cable, satalite and cell. It will take time but phone lines will likely go the way of the horse and buggy. Unfortunatly the jobs and money will go with them. I worked in a profitable division of a company that was losing money elsewhere, it is an injustice to have money taken from one division to prop up another on a long term basis. We would see facilities remodled and continue to loose money while we drove ambulances with 300+ thousand miles on them and were told there were no funds to replace them. Things change and that has consequences. Sometimes your job drops in value and pay and bennifits will have to reflect that. |

Good article by Stephen Moore, refer to the link below:
Obamanonics vs. Reaganomics I agree whole heartly that "Reagan applied tax cuts and other policies that, yes, took the deficit to unchartered peacetime highs. But that borrowing financed a remarkable and prolonged economic expansion and a victory against the Evil Empire in the Cold War. What exactly have Mr. Obama's deficits gotten us?" Randy |

Excellent reply. But unfortunately, gov. Rick Scott from Florida already tried tried this. Here is the quick version, below I will post the links for your verification. Scott is testing ALL Florida residents whom receive welfare. 1.2 Million Florida residents admit to illegal drug use in the past month. That is 8% of ALL Florida residents, welfare or not. Since testing has started, 2% of residents on welfare have tested positive. Here is the verification. 2% failing drug tests 8% drug use reported, Its on page 4, bottom Hey, I really don't disagree with you about cancelling the checks of those that use drugs. But it is not half of the poor, and the cost of testing everybody, far out weighs the cost of the 2% who fail and get benefits. |

That is an interesting article. Kinda what I thought before I even read it, Mr. Moore has been a supply side guru from day one. Because that article leaves out so many details it can hardly be used to bolster support for "lowering taxes". Anyone with an above average knowledge base in economics of any sort, articulate, and a forum for their particular ideology could do the exact same work Mr. Moore has done. During these years the economy had nowhere to go but up, remember that. |

I remember that the economy had no where to go but up throughout Carters administration also, it only turned after taxes and regulations where decreased and the economy was unleashed. Our current economy has no where to go but up but it is stagnant despite stimulaus after stimulus, how many times will se do the same thing over and over that does not work? Especially when we know what does!!! |

Remember there were problems with regan too.
The horse is only half as good as having the carriage with the horse. The economy had nowhere to go but up under Bush, and lowered taxes didn't help there. |

How about along with drug testing, we require people that get welfare to do work for it...ie...painting, cleaning, construction, etc. I bet you would see the welfare roles drop like a rock if people were required to work for that money. Wheres the incentive to be a productive member of society if we don't do these things?
Is this such a bad idea? Whats the harm here? Will it hurt peoples self esteem? |

Well, did you read what I posted about the drug testing? Are you just going to sweep what I said under the rug, and forget about it?
Ok, so we require them to do work. I agree with you!! Except that about shoots the argument of government creating jobs right in the heart. |
