I'm looking to get a barefoot boom for my 86 I'm looking for pros and cons of the BI contour boom vs the straight boom.

countour will make circulation around the boat easier as the inner section sits lower to the floor, depending on how is set in the clamp it can be monted more fwd or aft. It also allows you to mount both extended pylon and boom at the same time (at list in non ring and finger pylons).

I have a countour boom, so I canĀ“t give you the insight on the straight one....

Don't they still make the height adjuster if I find a deal on a straight boom? Also I'm considering the ring saver mount but I'm afraid its going to stick out front of the pylon to far and my family will bang there shins on it a lot.

I have the ECI straight boom.
I like the ECI quick-clamp alot better than the BI or Casad clamps that require a wrench or set-screws.

Although I have heard stories of guys breaking their ECI clamps.   Probably due to improper adjustment, (over-tightening)

I run a straight BI boom on my boat with a height adjuster. I can run an extended pylon with the clamp/adjuster/boom in place. My rig works great and I'm told from others on here that the straight boom is the way to go for the 2001 boats.

I will say that you will probably want the extension on these BI booms as the side spray is intense.

how do you fasten the BI end extension to the end of the boom? need to remove the red rubber cover? and fasten the set screw in the extension?

Yes, you got the idea kapla. It's only a skinny handle for kids, you don't put a rope on it.

I found a contour boom with extension and a toe harness handle for 300 is this a good deal.I'm still wondering which is the best for my 2001 straight one or contour boom. I want to be able to move in the boat with the boom in place and I got a fly high pole as well now. Any one have a pic to help me decide??

Lots of pictures, do a search. Swatkinz had a thread with something like "boom advice" in the title.

I've got a BI straight boom for our '84 2001. We don't use a height adjuster but put a boat cushion or two between the boom and gunnel to adjust the height. I recently bought a second extension piece that fits in between the two long pieces). Each extension is about 18". The side spray from the boat really drowns you until you get up to speed and extensions help. The side spray is especially crappy for teaching beginners.

I spoke with Mike S. at Barefoot International and he said always go with the straight boom if you can. I got a good deal on a Single contour Straight Boom. It works fine, but the contour makes it hard to adjust in the height adjuster. Some tell me that it is hard to adjust the straight boom in the height adjuster. They are a great tool for teaching kids. I have one on my 80. The sigle countour really does not give you any more leg room in my opinion. It is still a PITA.

the nice thing about a contour is that you can flip it over and have a very high boom without using any padding.

the contour booms are made to fit boats with windshields wrapping around extending back past the pylon

the height adjuster works well but it is not easy to change with cables hooked up

straight booms work well too but you can't get them as high

I could use either and I prefer the versatility of the contour boom over a straight boom
This is the life

I really like the universal contour boom i put it on the forward setting to get a better resting point away from the side grab rail. I still use a throw cushion under it for added protection.
