very true, got some solid 24 grit pads today at HF. They did wonders for grinding. I think the flap pads are good for remoging paint and cleaning the job up..the starboard side is just about done, the problem is TIME...I have noticed that winder isa great time to do the grinding...this would suck 100X more doing this in the middle of summer!

i was thinking the same thing today as i was grinding out my rudder port.i recommend grinding your port out.it was by far the worst damage i have found.the glass was 80% delaminated,it was the first piece of wood to come out easy.lots of contaminated/wet glass in this area.

ehhh there is a project i would like to avoid! I took off my rear exhaust yesterday as I was cleaning up...looked like the wood was damp but solid...i need to go look at it again, but will prob end up taking it out.

ya sorry man, I dont really know, I used to think that DF was DF, pete would be the one to chime in but he is out for the week so. If you wait until he gets back he could probably advise you.
Hows the deconstruction coming? You done grinding yet? I am nearing the end of the dust making process. But I suspect I will have 1 or 2 more mess making sessions before I can really clean the workspace up and have it stay that way. |

As long as it is straight and true, and dry without too many knots you should be fine. |

i thought it was all the same too, but wanted to double check, i feel like if it was a huge deal i would have gotten a ton of feed back... Thats awesome! Mine must be about at the same stage, but its def coming, Im just about finished grinding, I want to get one more flap pad and hit it all again before i say I'm ready to glass. |

my thoughts exactally...i counted two small knots per board so i figured it was fine. My luck i would glass it all in and then someone would inform me of an issue hahaha. |

no I dont think there is really any issues regarding this. I think honestly if you put enough glass over it the board underneath is not just a big deal. Any DF should do the trick and be plenty strong. I mean there may better or worse but its gonna be stronger than throwing some homedepot pine in there. Also if you CPES and wrap in fiberglass with epoxy resin its gonna be better than new. I dont think the grade of fir is gonna be a deal breaker. Although I am also not saying someone wont get on here later and be like well what you really wanted was north dakota douglas fir for is greater strength to weight ratio...... this is a made up scenario.

Ya thats pretty cheap, probably too cheap but I still think you should be fine. Like brian (bishop) said, just be sure to CPES and tape and wrap with fiberglass well and it will last longer than you will be using it.
Bishop (I will now refer to you using your last name to avoid confusion), how come I dont see any pictures of your job? You holding out on us? |

hmm maybe a format issue, do you save them as jpeg? maybe a setting on your internet explorer or something. You could try using firefox or try uploading from a different pc to see if its the pc or the pictures.

Brian I was having a similar issue I think...are you getting an error with the pic size? I actually had to adjust a setting on my camera to make the mega pix smaller and then it worked for me

ya, I mean, if you have the money for coosa def do it. Especially on a silver!! Wish mine was a silver I would definitely do it (Mines a silver wanna be). Mine needs new gel below the waterline too but maybe in a few years after you show me how easy it is I will tackle that job!

It seems to take most folks some searching for the lumber but you will probably find it if you are persistent. Took me 2 days on the phone but I finally got it just a few miles from my house.

Money is why i went to wood construction.with a house restoration going on at the same time it seems to disappear quickly.Justin, that black gel does not stand up too well.it should be a fun learning process.i hope some can learn from my mistakes, just be patient because its going to be a while. |

Ok so I made an exact carbon copy to the pressure treated stringer the PO had installed....the other one as I have posted is completely destroyed. Anyways I put them in the boat and dry fitted the engine mount, which seems to fit perfect. But for the past hour I have been staring at the 3/4" gap in the center of the stringer.....I would assume that not being a professional boat builder Im not the only one who has had this problem, but I'm not 100% sure what to do. The local boat/fiberglass shop said to use boat floor putty (not sure if thats what it is, but he said it is a common mistake.

brian 826 - you need to mix up a gooey mixture of fiberglass and microbaloons or flox or whatever filler you ordered. read some of the stringer threads where they talk about "peanut butter" 3/4 of an inch is a pretty big gap, but if you mix the PB good and thick, set yoru stringer and then squirt it into the gap (like frosting a cake), you should be able to fill that up. I am certainly going to default to the guys have done this, but that is what I would try first... My build is in the saving money stage, so thanks for showing the way!

I'm pretty sure this would be a polyester resin base product. With the epoxy and the CPES I would not use it. Go with the filler mixed in to your epoxy resin as mentioned. |
