when i stand on one side of the boat and make it lean (usually the pass side) for any extended period of time (3-4 minutes) water puddles start apperaring on my carpet where the sides meet the floor. it looks as if the water is coming up through the floor. anyone else have the problem? is this normal? boat is a standard 19.5 foot. no mods to the boat at all.

That is normal, if the water in the hull is deep enough when the boat leans it will run to the side. Have you checked your packing? This will only happen in my boat if I don't turn on the bilge pump. Is your bilge pump working ok?

1 inch or so of water in the hull. not even enough to run the pump. can't figure out where the water is coming from. packing is good (about 10-12 drips per minute). i was hoping this was normal. the boat has done it for the 15 years i have owned it. the floor is solid with no soft spots.

Yea my floor is solid also, that one inch of water in the hull is enough to leak through if the boat is leaned far enough over. What boat do you have?

just the regular 1989 19.5 foot 2001 hull with the 351 pcm. nothing fancy. i'm in the process of listing it for sale since my wife now wants a pontoon boat. we never really skiied off of it so it only has 395 hours on it. i'de like to get 8500 out of it. think thats reasonable?

I need to verify something here. Is the water coming up thru the floor & puddling on the carpet? If that is the case 1" of water in the bilge should not be coming up on the floor. I have had several boats & have never seen this. First, how is the water from the bilge area getting to the side of the boat. The area on the sides should have foam in them & not water. Second, shouldn't the floor be glassed to the side of the hull. If that is the case water should not be going thru the glass. I don't know the boat (nor am I an expert) but it sounds to me like the foam & areas on the sides are full of water and the floor is maybe just plywood without being glassed on top. If that is the case the water could be getting under the floor area on the sides of the floor. When you lean the boat to the side, the water is deep enough to come back up thru the floor. I wouldn't think that is a good situation!

My thoughts exactly. Unless the carpet is saturated from skiing/whatever, then I think you have a foam saturation/flooring problem.

ok, well maybe it's a little more that an inch. the hull is in no way anwhere near full as i leave the auto bilge on all the time. maybe 2 inches. it happens always when my wife and i stand up against the passenger side wall for a minute or so (which does put the boat on a pretty good tilt. it's been doing this for all of the 15 years i've owned the boat. the floor is completely solid everywhere. i was wondering if anyone else with that vintage of nautique has the same problem. the boat is listed in the for sale section on this site if you'd like to see pics of it.

aquaholic,
My point above is that it doesn't matter how much water is in your bilge area, (unless it is full & running out over the top) that water should not be able to run out under your floor at the hull. If you look at the many pics of floor replacements on here, you can see what I am talking about. The bilge area is seperate from the side areas under the floor. If water is running out from the floor at the hull, you do have foam & water problems. |

I had the problem a few years ago. It took some time to figure out, but our problem ended up being the seal between the top and bottom of the boat. Around the rub rail, we would turn to that side and it would get wet. Hope this helps.

You really dont want to mess around with a leaky deck/hull joint. If it leaks you should fix it, I had a friend ride around for years with a 68 that would leak progressivly worse when turning hard (the spray off the side can really pelt that joint hard). Eventually he washed away all the adhesive and the waves worked the mechanical fastners loose, one wavy day he came back and the deck had literally hopped up off the hull. Very dangerous a few wires and cables were basically all that kept the boat in "one" piece. If it leaks I would attack it with 3200 and screws before the pressure of the water opens it up farther.

Hey Aqua,
You say this happens when you stand on the pass side. Does it do it equally when you stand on the other side as well? Seems to me if it's bildge water it would be the same either way. Just a thought. |

My 77 has done it all its life. very hard to figure out, after my restoration I found that between the deck and hull were screw holes from the bump rail. the screws had rusted and broken leaving an unsecure bump rail and a leak. The rivots holding the deck on are in great shape but after the talk of the deck coming off I might re investigate the problem. My advice and how I found the problem was to get a buddy to stick his head under the dash at about 15mph and look for a leak. sorry for the novel.

to determine how much water you actualy have in the boat you may want to weigh it and the get the weight of another boat of the same model and year that does not have this issue. If you have that much water in the foam it shold make the boat weigh quite a bit more. Another way is to see where the water line is on the hull compaired to another boat of the same model and year. Then put water cans in it until it is at the same level. You now know how much is in your foam.
