What insurance company does everybody use? And what amount do yall insure your boat for? I have a 89' 2001 that I just picked up and trying to see what the general consensus is on insurance on something like that.

Global Marine (endorsed by USA Waterski) has been a great broker. Theyve found me true agreed-upon replacement policies for all of my older boats.

I use Voyager Marine Ins. out of Dallas. It is underwritten by Progressive. Agreed value policy for a good price. Haven't had a claim. So I don't know how they are in that department. But they are good at cashing my checks.

I applied with Boat US yesterday, so far so good. Quick, easy communication. I have to pull up my floor to submit a picture of my "fuel system".

Been with Foremost (owned by Farmer's) for some time now. I have an AGV policy which was for a nice replacement value back in 2006 but, unchanged, is now a ridiculous amount for my 12 year old boat and the premiums are still very reasonable.

Some companies require a Self Survey with pictures, especially on older models. |

Exactly, self survey with pictures.
I'm not taking anything out that isn't supposed to come out, just the floor panel and behind the backseat. |

I have an 89sn insured with Boat US I didn't have to do any kind of self survey. Mine is just under $300 a year for a declared value of $10,000 and the highest coverage on everything else. They are an A rated insurance company so if you have an umbrella policy with another insurance company you can add your boat onto that as well if your interested in more libality protection. I had a $900 policy with State Farm for less coverage for about 3 month before I figured that all out. With Boat US you also get a year Boat US membership and West Advantage Gold membership with West Marine. That gets you a $10 gift certificate for ever $250 you spend there. You can also add their trailering program for $14 a year that covers your trailer and tow vehicle, well worth it in my opinion because AAA will not help you with a boat trailer as I found out the hard way. -Lou

I have used Ski Safe for the last three years. It is very easy to get set up with them and they are site sponsors. I pay $222.00 per year and they are a site sponsor. They do not offer agreed upon coverage for my 1980 boat. I want to move to some one who does, but Boat US wanted me to do the Self Survey and have a flare gun. I just was in a hurry to get on the water three years ago and Ski Safe was very easy to work with. I need to upgrade, but I will probably renew with them this month. I have the bill on my desk.

Donald, call Global Marine- I had no problem getting agreed upon values on my older boats through them. They found me policies with Ace and Progressive, right around $300/year (with high liability limits).

Don't know if Boats US changed their policy but back 3-4 yrs ago they wanted me to get a marine survey done nothing was said about self done back then. What really turned me off was the reason they wanted it - just because it was an inboard. I asked what was the difference did an I/O need one? Their answer was no I/O didn't,I said good bye---

For old boats, I've found Progressive easy to deal with, but make sure you put the amount you're going to eventually want on it as they won't let you increase the agreed upon value without an appraisal.

Oletela, I have a '99 Sport Nautique with a dual-axle trailer. I'm insured with Travelers for an agreed-value of 30k (inc. trailer). I'm on a custom-pac policy that rolls in my homeowners, my vehicle and a personal liability policy, so I don't have a premium handy for ya. I'm a bit high on the agreed value, even taking the trailer into account, but the difference in premium was not significant so in the event of a total loss, I can easily replace this boat with something similar and newer and not be out of pocket at all. Hope this helps you.... |

Again, liability coverage, followed by comprehensive coverage are going to be the biggest contributors to the cost of the premium. Replacement value has little impact in comparison... so stating your replacement value vs. premium cost can be very misleading, as its only telling part of the story.

If you took a Coast Guard boating course you are elegible for a discount, not much but worth mentioning if you took a course. Also make sure your liability covers skiers if you tow. Boat insurance is better through boat people like Ski Safe, Boat US etc. Especially if you ever need to make a claim.

I have had Boat US since I purchased my boat in '94. Have had two claims both paid with no problems. My friend broke his femur behind my boat and they paid his $5K medical deductable even when I only had 1K extra medical. I raised it to $10K after that incident. I hit the bottom of Lake Powell on the first ski run of a 10 day houseboat trip and bent everything. Insurance paid $7K to fix it.

I have State Farm with an agreed value of $30000 and $500 deductible and its $281. I thought that was pretty good, I know we get a discount for having 2 boats insured with them as well.
