No fluid leaking. it was a QT low when I bought it.Ran it once thats when it started slipping. I put a QT of fluid in stopped the slip but neutral is still funky like I said.

If it's that bad, you sure have warped clutch plates from slipping. I'd sure pull the trans and get it off to FFM. Is there any fluid leakage?

Does the dirty neutral remain after it warms up? My 87 has had dirty neutral problems for years but it goes away when the trans fluid warms up, and I can idle at a dock with minimal effort to hold the boat in place.
For thousands of years men have felt the irresistible urge to go to sea, and many of them died. Things got better after they invented boats.

Hey guys I filled with dex an ran the boat around for about an hour. No slipping. reverse works but neutral still seems like it wants to pull. Like if i have it running at the dock to warm up I cant hold on to the dock because it wants to pull in neutral. Is that because the tranny is about to go? (dirty neutral) I would hope to make it through the summer before I pull it.

Mike,
I do agree that the exhaust does push a little when the engine is started.

Pete,
I agree with you. If it is slipping and has good fluid with the right amount then the tranny needs some love. Looking at his thread I was not sure how many of these boats he has started, Everyone I ever started all push a little whn fired up.

Mike,
I really feel Terry is in need of a rebuild. It's the dirty neutral but even more convincing is the slipping he's getting. Both point to warped clutch plates.

Does it push right when you fire it up or does it keep pushing?
I believe they all push a little upon starting. Mostly from the sudden rush of exhaust and water.
Thanks Mike

Terry,
Check out your other thread for the cost. This is a good example of keeping the same subject in the same thread! Give FFM a call for the turn around time. You looked at their web site - the phone # is on it.

Removing the trans is pretty easy and straight forward. If you don't have a means of hoisting the aft end of the engine, a bottle jack under each manifold works great. The prop shaft coupling is disconnected as well as the aft engine mounts. Front mounts are loosened and the engine is tilted. Don't forget to put a new dampner plate on with the rebuilt trans. You will need to do an alignment when it's all back together. In the "new" section of the forums, there is a alignment vidio.

Thanks for the help. Sounds like im going to be pulling the tranny soon. Iv never done it before so any advice would help. Once I get it out an shipped how long should I expect the turn around to take? What should i expect to pay? (ballpark)

Eric,
Terry mentioned the dirty neutral above as well in his previous threads on the same slipping subject. From his description, it's so "dirty" that it pushes the boat when it's in the water.

Terry,
As suggested in your other thread with the dirty neutral and the slipping, I feel it's time for a rebuild. The dirty neutral is the indicator of warped clutch plates.

The fluid level is to the line when COLD.

BTW, it's always best to keep the same subject in the same thread. That way, we won't get confused!

Terry, Please turn off the cap lock on your computer. Typing in all capitals is considered yelling when online, although I can understand where potentially burning up your tranny might make you feel like yelling. . Good luck, I am not much help with the rest. I fill to but not past the line just like oil in my car.

how long did you run the boat before it started slipping??? and fill it to the line with the labeled trans fluid probably a dextron lll maybe?? and you should be able to fill it up if you have not burned the clutches in the trans. if you ran it for a while, while they were slipping a rebuild will probably be in order. Eric will be along to help a little more

BORG WARNER VELVET DRIVE. CAN I JUST ADD TO IT OR DO I HAVE TO DRAIN IT THEN REFIL. ONLY HAD THE BOAT OUT ONCE AN IN NEUTRAL OPON STARTING IT WOULD PULL FORWARD . TOOK OFF FINE THEN STARTED SLIPPING SO I LIMPED IT BACK TO THE DOCK. CHECKED FLUID AN LESS THAN HALF INCH ON THE STIKE. SO WHAT U THINK ON HOW CLOSE TO THE LINE SHOULD I FILL.

what kind of tranny do you have in your 80'. Most people will tell you to put back in what you pulled out during the extraction, if your changing the fluid. More will be along with some suggestions
