I have a 1998 ski nautique with approx. 360 hrs on it. When the motor is cold and you drop it into gear I hear a grinding sound coming from the transmission. It goes away when it warms up. The fluid level is correct per the manuel with approx. 2 quarts of Dexron III and the there is no vibration. It runs and shifts perfect. I'm trying to pin point the problem. Does anyone have any suggestions?

If in fact you hear grindind sound, check the fluid and look for metal shavings.

Thanks. Already checked for that and there are no metal shavings. I guess I'm just going to have to keep investigating.

Could it be a bad damper plate?

N.G.,
I agree with Chris so do check the damper. Also, when was the last time you aligned the shaft to the strut and engine. If misaligned and run for some time, it will tear up the trans. Metal shavings have a tendency to collect at the bottom of the case so you may or may not see anything via the dip stick. |

Prop shaft has never been out of the boat. I will check the damper plate to see if everything is aligned.

This doesn't matter. Again, when was the last time you aligned the shaft to the strut and engine? Do check it. |
