Let's face it, we blew it. I'm seeing folks going on right now who didn't have much to say when it mattered; just like the multiple opportunities Romney passed on concerning Benghazi. Every single item like Benghazi and mammograms should have been hammered. A charge unanswered might as well be true? ...since so many are too stupid or lazy to know for themselves. The republican party tried to run on the myth that good and right will win out. Sadly, our populus/dumbmasses need most things done for them.

And I think anyone who doesn't think Benghazi is going under the rug is nutz.

Bye, Bye Ms American pie...we live in a new country now. Again, I beg you to read up on how Rhodesia became Zimbabwe.

I think the "belly aching" your hearing from a few of us,is the reality check of trying to keep our business'open and holding onto jobs.

Not so big guy but thanks for the recognition. I am a retired woodworker and I took retirement because the last three years as an aging trades person in a bad economy, I had no work. Have you ever had to live on your own funds for that period of time? It can be financially devastating.

With the navigation feature, my family realizes more in gas savings than the plan costs. I think Quinner will back me up on that one, I picked him up for the last Chicago Beers meeting and needed it to find the Kilt only a few miles away. Also, almost every post I make is from my phone. In that respect everyone here probably wishes I had a $9 flip phone.

This thread could hit 100 pages. Espcially since the threads name is "You didnt build that".

That lady in mass that won the seat came out in a video and told people "There is no one in America that has ever got rich or built something in America".

Look at the stock market today. Taking it in the keester. Here comes the "change". Print more money we dont got, and sky rocket taxes.

And heard he will attempt in going after the 2nd amendment in the consititution. But will go around congress, and around the constitution and put a regulation on bullets that they are bad for the enviroment. Then the IRS can inforce this law. I feel sorry for the IRS. And on top of that, hand our enemies our luclear weapons.

Have I ever had to live on my own funds? Thats ALL we have lived on for the last TWENTY SIX years.

My wife and I run our own business (started in 1986) and depend totally on it for our combined livelihood...there is NO other income.   It is directly related to residential construction. I appologize if you think I'm "belly aching", but, I sincerely do not know how I can keep our business open if construction does not start picking up. They keep saying the economy is getting better. I see nothing close to recovery in our area.

Did you also run your own business? I mean no disrespect to you, actually it sounds like we're in the same boat. btw, just currious, how old are you? I'm 58.

Steve, I am happy to answer your questions. As a cabinet maker I worked out gf my own home shop since I was laid off back in 1991. Have seen many turns in the economy and survived them all. I am now 62 and as said have taken retirement. I also downsized my holdings in real estate and tightened my belt. I personally know several others who have been in your same situation. A neighbor in FL lost everything including a business in the construction industry and 73 employees. You are not alone. Would think folks like you should welcome changes like an opportunity to get socialized medicine. Once the bugs are worked out we will all be better off medically.

Cabinetmaker!?? Wow, we really are closer than you think. We design kitchen cabinetry and have a 3800 SqFt building/showroom. We are located in a town that has aprox 25,000 population. We have lost over 12,000 manufacturing jobs in the last 20 years.

The bad economy, coupled with todays "boxstore mentallity" is killing us. Being 58, I have no retirement option for at least 4 more years. Even then, like a lot of us (business owners), we have used most of our savings trying to keep up with overhead. And there is very little left at the end of the month to even try to build it back up.

As for health care. I thank God we are both healthy. All I have seen change since obamacare, is our insurance premium. It has gone UP over 50% in the last couple years. So far, I do not see any benefits from it.

I have been trying to think of other vialable income options to help get us thru, but keep coming up empty....Wanna buy a business in the "sticks"?

This is not meant as an argument, it is just my opinion. I am not looking for a fight.
I feel for all of your hardships and I really hope things get better for each of you, but I am betting it will be a long time until we establish stability in the housing market. I believe all of you in real estate / construction related industries are having a hard time accepting that you may not see the market like it was again in your lifetime. We were living in an imaginary economy where everyone believed that you could make money buying a house, slapping a few cosmetic improvements on it, and flipping it for profit. When the bubble finally burst (there are many reasons and I don't want to argue about them) it was over.
Like the Dot Com industry, the construction / real estate industry is not coming back to the artificial level it was once at.   I know this is very hard on those who have developed few skills outside of those that cater to that industry, but it is reality. I really feel for you who are my age and are looking for work in an industry that has shrunk to a fraction of what it once was. My heart really goes out to you woodworkers and those of you like Quinner, who were involved in the industry for years during it's sensible, reasonable, sustainable days. You now must compete with those who hopped on the bubble at the end and are now trying to compete in the much smaller leaner market there is.
As is the case in business, either the best, those with the greatest assets, or those who adapt the quickest survive, and the ones who do will emerge stronger and with the experience to weather future storms. The housing bubble was discussed for years before it happened. A very simple philosophy has served me well.
If everyone is doing it, you're too late.
Time moves on and the world changes, embrace the changes. Don't be a TI99 in a 3-D tri-Gate world. Look to the wave of the future, don't lament on what once was. We are a nation that saw our best days when we looked forward and planned for the future. There are more good days ahead, and I hope you all enjoy the benefits of these future good days.
Until then, those of you who can, burn your stress and frustration off skiing and maintaining and restoring these floating bits of history.

john,
First, I think you know by now, I am not looking for sympathy or handouts.

Thank God ,we have always lived a conservative lifestyle and owe nothing (except a little on the business). All we need to survive is our monthly expenses.    Sad to say, I think MOST politicians (D's & R's) have lost touch with reality.

I realize the building industry will never come back in my time. It's hard to set back and watch 37 years of my life (thats how long I've been in cabinet the industry) slowly going down the drain.

Owning a commercial building(well me and the bank) makes it hard to just walk away. Plus, I really dont want to.

We keep our faith... its what helps us get thru. We are still Waayyyyy better off than most of the world...and for that I thank my God.

Housing will come back. We're only 6 years into this cycle. The crash we had in the 80's and 90's, (remember the S&L bailout) started at the peak in 87 or 88, bottomed out in 93, was stagnant until 98 and then people started buying and prices increased until 06 when it started all over again. So that was about 10 years from peak to rebound. Steve, eventually people will have to remodel their homes. Every slow year creates pent up demand. I know you don't want to wait until your 70 to be able to start cranking out kitchens. The market is stabilizing with low rates. Hopefully, they'll continue to stay low until somehow jobs rebound.

I don't believe that many small manufacturers are looking for handouts, short hours, or low stress. I would like to believe that there are enough people out there looking for the kind of quality you don't find in box stores to keep the true craftsmen busy. Do you do only residential, or do you get into high end commercial and retail fixtures?

Rebound to what Bruce? My kid has been out of work for almost 2 years. The jobs he can do want a Masters and are willing to pay up to 14 an hour. Luckely he has paid off his loans and moved back home. With nothing more that a high school education,by the time I was his age I was a journeyman making great money and putting it away so I could retire when I got tired of the games at 56. These kids today with their actions have just signed up to be indentured servants. Remember the Holy Grail line, Hey old man, the names Dennis and I'm 32? What happens here has already happened in England. Keep an eye on them cuz thats where we will be---

John,
The vast majority of our business has been residential, with an occasional "light commercial" (clinics, dentists, offices, etc) Even the commercial in our area is pretty much flat.

As for quality, there are a few still looking. One big problem is there is little new construction. In fact we are just finishing a new home project, the first in over three years.

We had always concentrated on custom cabinets. Then about six years ago, I could see the writing on the wall and took on a stock line cabinets to compete with the big boys. We started re-directing who we were marketing to. But, "that younger generation" has a complete different mindset. They actually like the boxstores and one stop shopping. ... never will figure that out.

anyway... enough complaining for now.

these days make us stronger, I realized years ago that life was pretty easy, you gotta buckle down and not reflect on days gone by, the formula to success is pretty simple, don't make 10 grand one day and spend 15 the next, when times are good people strap themselves, bigger house, 2 car payments, 6 maxed out credit cards, we got pretty use to that style of living, and when its time to buckle down and trim some fat tear drops appear and we look for someone or something to put the blame on, we get greedy real greedy, life is short and if were lucky we will see 70 years old. I firmly believe that Obama was left with what I would consider a depression, he really did pull us out of something that could have been much, much worse and he was precise on bailing GM out, pulling us out of Iraq and almost out of Afghanistan, killing Osama, many many things accomplished in 4 years, he walked in with 10 trillion in the red.....you ever get behind on a house payment? it takes three times the amount of energy to catch up, I feel he was left with a bag of shet. Im not gloating at all here or being a poor winner, but I can see a quality and genuine personality in the guy. black, red yellow we all fall in that category somewhere and if you think of him as anything other than American I would consider you a true racist, Im way beyond calling a spade a spade because in some form we are all from somewhere else, unless you came from this land, I really would rather give my money away to some poor family where it may do some good than to fuel a rich group to fuel A yacht. Sure there are people that take advantage of the system, I probably have sometime in my life at one point. but GD, the rich in this country, the ones way beyond you and me, do really use the system and make the rules to benefit themselves and their friends, im ranting here and and as you all know my mother passéd last week, she flourished in her lifetime but did have some health problems, she left over 100k in hospital bills, she worked hard all of her life, raising 3 boys on her own, healthcare was starting to spiral out of control in the 80's at that's where I realized something is wrong with the system but no president would touch on the healthcare crises, I feel that living in the most powerful richest country in the the world that HC should not be a privilege, the more money you have the better HC you get, We all have stacks of bills on our kitchen counter to pay for healthcare and we emphasize dumping trillions into defense and we don't even blink an eye...
I know most of you are Rominians but we got 4 more and I really think we are heading forward and not behind.
im just babbling and I am not here going ha ha ha, there is a lot of good in this guy and you need to give him a chance

Eric, You are making excuses for him saying 10 trillion in debrt was to much to inherit. Well now he is inheriting 16 trillion. We have no choice but to give him another chance. But I do not share your optimism. Apparently neither do investors by today's stock market. He has been at war with half oof this country for the last 5 years. Dont expect us to just forgive him for that. It is foolish to treat someone who has declared you an enemy as anything other than your enemy. He needs to seriously reach out and ask forgiveness for how he has treated the right if he wants any help from them.
For thousands of years men have felt the irresistible urge to go to sea, and many of them died. Things got better after they invented boats.

It will be interesting to see if he reaches out to the other half, or tries to push further to the left. He certainly did not try to unite the country the first 4 years. The next 2 years will be just like the past 2 if he does not try to work with both sides. Nothing really changed with the house and senate.
