I had Ski safe several years. Now have Hagerty with stated value. They are known for collector car insurance.

Jimmy:
Read your profile. Gotta love the Aristocraft, actually a great hull design. Just hope it has the "ever-so-cool" sliding hardtop. Remember fondly as a kid the Steuben County (NY) Sheriff Patrol ran Aristocrafts on Lake Keuka....even cooler still with bubblegum-light and a big star on the side. What GA lake you on???? |

Sorry but I do not have a good opinion on Hargerty. I know several ACBS members who have had problems with them. I'm not someone to fall for a service/product just because they go to lot's of boat shows and give away key chain "floaty's". They would be my very LAST choice for insurance. |

I use Boat US as well. Process was quick!
I got my quotes before I purchased and just phoned them when I purchased to start coverage. I didn't have to do any kind of survey as my 1999 SN and trailer replacement values were within their book value range. I did get quotes for older boats I was planing to restore. In those cases, I would need to present survey info as one would expect. $300k liability ($900k for fuel spill coverage, crazy but understandable I guess). BoatUS offers a watersport pkg for additional $30. Covers $5k equipment, $5k extra medical and automatic Tournament Coverage in addition to the $1k pp. I figure all someone has to do is snag a $200 ski line/handle and it pays for it self for 7 yrs. Anyhow, I think I am all in for around $260 yr. and I got a sticker! There are a lot of additional features BoatUS and other marine specialty insurance companies offer. |

I don't know how far you got into it with them but an I/O or an outboard at the time I checked did not require a marine survey only an inboard. A number of years ago I had them and it was not required so why now? When I questioned them why an inboard and not the I/O they had no answer, so no thanks. |

Hey Gary,
In my case, they assumed it had an inboard... I just confirmed it. I spoke to three different agents getting rates for three different inboards before I bought mine too. None needed a Survey. My Dad didn't for his back in early 90s when he switched to BoatUS. The only reason I would think they would need a survey for an inboard would be if the OE for that model was an OB or I/O and it was modified or if this was an older boat as the value could range significantly (just my guess). Anyone else ever have this issue? |

Surveys are more common with wood hulls. The underwriters do not want to insure a rotten hull that may go under anytime.

I use Progressive and have an agreed value policy of $10,000 for my '89. It runs about $160/yr. This is the same company and policy I had on my 1990 Malibu that was totaled in a car accident a few years ago. They were very helpful during the claims process and I recieved a check for the full amount in just a few weeeks. Also, the accident (not my fault)and claim did not affect my premiums when I got my new boat.

Ive stated this over and over, but I'll do so again. Having a generous agreed upon replacement value in your policy is nice- but it is not a large driver in premium cost, in my experience. The single biggest driver is liability coverage (I would consider 100k/300k to be the bare minimum). Without that piece of information, its impossible to know if youre getting a good deal or not- if you have 500k of liability, its a great price, if only 10k, not so much. |

Progressive may not charge a lot more for a higher agreed upon value, but I can't get them to budge on raising the agreed upon value without an appraisal, which seems odd as they don't tie the initial agreed upon value to an appraisal. We'll probably have to find another company to get the coverage we want. Who appraises old Correct Crafts? Lesson learned, get the agreed upon value you'll want after your done restoring the boat when first insuring the boat.

[QUOTE=Riley] Who appraises old Correct Crafts? [QUOTE]
I appraise them all the time, don't you? Usually if I don't pay what Tim says they are worth he buys them before me... so I just go with his estimate. |

You guys are no doubt more qualified than just about anybody. Maybe you could write an appraisal? We'll be ready in the spring.

I use Boat US which is related to Geico. I Have Geico for our cars and they have been great. For my 89 2001 it is 170/year, which also covers trailer and freeze protection. I need to send pictures of exterior and interior.
