It's about time I'd do something about the appearance of my boat. New upholstery, trailer restoration, new cover are on the wishlist but they'll have to wait. New board racks are on the way.
The hull is heavily oxidized so that's going to be the first project. I had a little leftover Rubbing compound that I applied on the transom (looked worst). It cleaned it up tremendously, but it still doesn't shine so I think wet sanding is the way to go. Anyway, someone can bring back some stuff from the States for me now so I'm looking to get the materials for wet sanding and buffing etc. Can someone confirm that these are the right items: Super Duty Rubbing Compound Perfect it II Rubbing Compound Finesse it II Wax A rubber sanding block will be helpful, right? I can get dry/wet sanding paper locally and think I should be able to find the pads around here too. Any tips and comments are welcome! |

Those are the right items! You should be in good shape with that list. And yes, the rubber sanding block will be a good item to have as well.

I stick with the same line, all Perfect It and start with Super Duty Rubbing Compound on a wool pad. Since shipping may be an issue, pint bottles of everything would be plenty, but get a quart of the Super Duty Rubbing Compound. I use all 3M pads, they're color matched to make it easy. It will shine after the 1st round of compound, and just gets better with each round. I've also found that if you pic a spot and start sanding with the highest grit you can quickly figure out how far down you'll have to go with the sand paper.
I use the Colonite cleaner wax 920 followed by the Paste wax 885, cleaner goes real fast, 2 uses from a bottle, but has some solvent in it as well as grit so it takes of things that normally require a lot of elbow grease to remove. Paste Wax can lasts forever, I got at least 10 coats out of my 1st can. |

 Results!  This is a terrible pic, but in person its hard to tell which way the exhaust tip goes, you can see the reflection even though the pic is grainy. |

I ordered the stuff but it's not sure if it'll arrive in time for my friend to bring it back next week. Else a friend of her's is coming and bringing it early August. In the meantime I can look for the pads and tools. |

Can you give some more detail in the steps you took? You started with the Super Duty Rubbing Compound then went to the Perfect it? Also did you do it by hand or use a buffer/random orbital? thanks!!! and again, awesome looking boat! |

The transom was wet sanded starting at 600, it had a sticker on it that didn't get replaced so I had some extra work to get rid of the ghosting. I do 4 steps of polish with the compounding, I'm lazy and the compounding takes out most of the sanding marks. If you're anal about the sanding and truely get it to 1500 then you can skip the compound.
Everything is done with a rotary, actually read the bottle which said 2000 rpms in the past I've gone to 3000, seemed to work just as well, a little slower but easier to hold on to the polisher. I think most people would be thrilled with just the first step of polish, the next 2 just make the reflection brighter and clearer, but aren't as big an improvement as the first. |

Bummed; my friend who brought the 3m-stuff from the US for me discovered when she opened her suitcase that customs took out the bottles because they are "flammable liquids". Boat wax etc for fck'sake. :|

Damn.... it's been more than a year! Now finally picking up this project again.
Like I wrote before customs took out some of the bottles. 2 Made it, but my friend took the labels off that said "inflammable liquid". She didn't bring the labels, so now I'm not quite sure what I have here!  I checked online and it seems that the black bottle is Super Duty Rubbing Compound (3M 05954) and yellow is Perfect it II (05973). However I also saw a black bottle which was (05928) Finesse it II, though in all other pics I saw that was a white bottle. What do you all say? Looks like I still need to get the Finesse it II. |

The thing is that I ordered 4 products: - 05954 Super duty - 05973 Perfect it II - 05928 Finesse it II - and wax. Only those 2 bottles arrived. So they are 2 of those 3, but which ones, and the 3rd one I'll need to order again.

I am pretty sure that all the perfect it products are in a purple bottle, the lid is color coded to the pad you are supposed to use, the finess it products are not, so I think you are missing wax and perfect it 2. I agree that the heavy cut compound was black last time I ordered it. get out your buffer, you are not going to hurt the gel with either product, you should be able to tell which one cuts faster by experimentation.

What color is the compound in the bottles? I'll have to check, but I'm pretty sure I have the yellow one (Super Duty)and the compound is white. The colored compounds are in purple bottles and have tops that match the color of the liquid.

I've seen all different colored bottles, can't tell what's in it without the label. Finesse-it II is white and slippery. The compounds are tan and gritty. Super duty is thicker and grittier than all of the 3m intermediate compounds I've used, but I'm not sure you can tell the difference without having seen them both before, or having them side by side.

All my purple bottles have a top that matches the color of the compound inside and the foam pad they were designed to work with. I've had them for a few years so they may have changed things, but it's pretty idiot proof.

Looks like 3M is changing up bottles all the time.
I checked today and the black bottle had more orange colored stuff in it and much grittier than the yellow bottle, which had more off-white/yellow liquid. Now all I need to get is the Finesse it II, I believe. And the pads. And sanding paper. And some extra time! On to the next question: Pulled off the stickers I had on it today. What's the best way to get rid of residue of stickers? Current status:  Pretty obvious where the stickers were! Thanks everybody for all your help! |

LOL 2.5 years later I've finally started cleaning up the hull.
I can't get the 3M products here, so I'm looking for a replacement for the Finesse It. Anyone know what the equivalent from Meguiar's is? |
