Ball mount warning

For some of you mid-westerners you should consider the Carolina's. You still get all the seasons and can (with a bit of effort) enjoy boating year round.
Depending on where you are located taxes are pretty reasonable and when compared to what you paying they would have you doing the Snoopy dance.

For those who attended the Badin Lake Mini - our annual taxes are ~2k per year. Granted we have a septic system, city water and no trash pick up but I'll take it. Our lot is right at 1 acre with 200' of water frontage.

Our primary home (~16 miles outside of downtown Charlotte) is roughly $2,600/yr for a 5 BR / 3 bath.

Greg, your home on my lake with 200' of frontage, taxes would be 12-15k range, on average taxes run about 3-4% of actual value annually, ouch!!

A few of our neighbors built homes in Nebo, NC. They are on Lake James. It's out near Ashville. We went down there two years ago for the Holidays. It was pretty chilly (30's/40's) in the mornings. But, we got back to Chicago and there was a blizzard going on and I had to shovel the car out from under a foot of snow. But, gorgeous scenery in that area.

Indy.....My mom has 2 acres of beautiful wooded property just north of Indy (Fishers/Noblesville). Taxes are ~@2K/year. Her house is an old 3 br ranch, but, beautiful property. That area used to be farm country when I was a kid.....maaaany years ago. It is not even recognizable anymore with so much growth. But, that area always gets high marks for quality of life, and low costs.

We have a 4 br/2 bath home on a 1/4 acre lot. Taxes are $7K, and I suspect they are getting ready to give us a good intercoursing this next year due to the bad state of affairs in IL.

I could see doing Lake Geneva/Delavan WIS in the summer, and heading south/southwest in the winter. I like Alan's idea of hopping in an RV and roaming. Might use Indy as a home base for low taxes. Wisc is no bargain on taxes. One of the higher tax states.

There is a cool website I found. www.findyourspot.com. 8 sections of questions on climate, geography, culture, weather, etc. My spot was Bloomington, IN. South of Indy. Home to IU. Springfield, MO ranked high too.

North Carolina is a beautiful state and one of the few places I'd considered moving to, if I had to move. I've been to the Asheville and Charlotte areas and they both seem to offer great life styles. When I first went to Asheville back in the 1980's I couldn't believe how cheap real estate was, but I understand now that it has sky rocketed and is more expensive than in Maine.

In Maine we have long winters, short summers, low incomes, high taxes, high property prices, expensive heating seasons, huge mosquitos and black flies, but people keep moving here.

North Carolina also seems centrally located which makes it easier to get to reunions.

Georgia also a good alternative; lakes, mountains, ocean. Quite affordable. Just for comparison, our annual property tax this year was $2300 for a 4 bedroom/2.5 bath on 3/4 acre in very nice suburb 30 miles south of Atlanta.

Taxes on our much smaller house in CT were far higher and had to be spread out into the monthly PITA mortgage payment and all that, now I just walk into the tax office once a year and pay the bill.....

What a journey...Even now as a rise instead of a drop I'm surprised it's at the appropriate tongue height for a Forester coming from a 3/4 Suburban.

i'm not sure they are legal in place of an actual ball mount...

With the mount in the rise position, it comes out to the same 16" position that's on the Suburban. In fact, the mount I made has the same drop/rise as the one that came with the receiver/ball mount/wiring harness kit I purchased from etrailer.

We have to find a place that does not have ticks,alligators don't worry me now. As to the Weather Tech stuff,it is nice I have mats in all my vehicles. Made a special trip to the factory last summer to go to their store,quite an impressive place.

Pete that salesman sure "pulled the wool over your eyes."

I believe the Illinois law is something like any mount extending 4" or more past the bumper needs red/orange marking to be OK.
