2000 rpm is plenty usually recommend 1200-2000

If the product is in original containers post a picture and perhaps a member has some sitting around or info can be found on line

+1 I've heard nothing but good things about Collinite. Gonna give some a try this winter.

Since you can get online, check out AutoGeek.com. They sell just about any detailing thing you can think of and recommendations about what pads do what. I've had pretty good luck with Chemical Guys pads with the honeycomb patern for vehicles and the white pads also worked well with some cleaner wax on a neighbors boat with an orbital polisher.

If you can get a couple of each pad and some pad cleaner, it really makes a difference to have a clean pad. Had I known that when I did my boat I would have gotten 2 of each.

Update:
Finally finished wetsanding. Took about 70 hours total. And now there's still some ghosting from removed pinstripes...

But anyway now ready for the next steps. Never done anything like this so looking for some guidance and making sure I got everything!
I got 3M Super Duty rubbing compound and Perfect it II. I ordered Finesse it II and wax but they never made it here.

You can't get any of the 3M stuff here, so I asked for suggestions and Pete found the best replacement for the Finesse it II from Meguiar's., which seems to be the Ultimate polish.

Then some wax. Any recommendations, or what to look for?

Acetone to clean the hull in between the different steps.

I'm borrowing a polisher, need to get the pads. Wool pad for the rubbing compound, wool or foam for Perfect it? And foam for the Ultimate polish.
Polisher at a lower speed with every step, starting at 2000rpm for rubbing compound, correct?

Am I missing anything?

Cr@p, what a project!
Got the sticker residue off (sunflower oil I think it was, helped a lot but still a heck of a job to get it all off!). Now got some 30 estimated hours into the project, and just got to 400 grit, after 280!
But now getting the hang of it, confident it'll some day end (doubted that for a while!) and that it will actually come out pretty well.
Now to finish the 400, then 600, 800, 1000 and 1200, then buffing polishing finishing and waxing....    OMG what have I started?!

Acetone is a strong solvent but it evaporates way too fast. Zylene or Toluene will do it. We haven't been able to purchase Benzine in many years here. It was among the first substances that was proven to be a carcinogen. You wouldn't be able to get within 1000 miles of the state of California with the stuff!

i wouldn't use acetone on there.
try benzine, but you will need some elbow grease

Awesome, thanks! Gonna try to find it.

Next issue: acetone doesn't cut it to get sticker residue removed. It makes it soft, but it keeps sticking. Afraid I won't be able to find the 3m removal stuff. Other ideas?

Since we all like pics here, a before and after pic.

Still not done with the first stage. I tried 600 grit sandpaper but didn't do anything. Found a scouring sponge (think what it's called) that does the job. When done with a lot of force at least. Probably translates to 150 grit or so, so it does leave a lot of scratches, but they do come of with the 600.

Now first need to get the sticker-crap off before I can go to the 600.

WOW!! They sure do have the products. It's been awhile since I've purchased any.
Looking at their site, I'd say the Ultimate polish would be the equal
It says it's the last step before waxing.

Sander,
Does Meguiar's still have the abrasive level graph on their bottles? I'd look for the finest and give it a try. I've used their finest for buffing out varnish but the bottle is gone. How's their web site? I'll take a look at it.

LOL 2.5 years later I've finally started cleaning up the hull.
I can't get the 3M products here, so I'm looking for a replacement for the Finesse It. Anyone know what the equivalent from Meguiar's is?

Looks like 3M is changing up bottles all the time.

I checked today and the black bottle had more orange colored stuff in it and much grittier than the yellow bottle, which had more off-white/yellow liquid.
Now all I need to get is the Finesse it II, I believe. And the pads. And sanding paper. And some extra time!

On to the next question:
Pulled off the stickers I had on it today. What's the best way to get rid of residue of stickers?

Current status:

Pretty obvious where the stickers were!

Thanks everybody for all your help!

Mine too, and they are about a year old, so I think they haven't changed anything.   Amazon.com would have pictures of each bottle if you want to look for product pictures

Perfect it is purple
Finesse it II clear

I don't know anything about "colored tops" that Don speaks of. All the caps are white

I've seen all different colored bottles, can't tell what's in it without the label. Finesse-it II is white and slippery. The compounds are tan and gritty. Super duty is thicker and grittier than all of the 3m intermediate compounds I've used, but I'm not sure you can tell the difference without having seen them both before, or having them side by side.

What color is the compound in the bottles? I'll have to check, but I'm pretty sure I have the yellow one (Super Duty)and the compound is white. The colored compounds are in purple bottles and have tops that match the color of the liquid.

I am pretty sure that all the perfect it products are in a purple bottle, the lid is color coded to the pad you are supposed to use, the finess it products are not, so I think you are missing wax and perfect it 2.   I agree that the heavy cut compound was black last time I ordered it. get out your buffer, you are not going to hurt the gel with either product, you should be able to tell which one cuts faster by experimentation.

Thanks guys.

The thing is that I ordered 4 products:
- 05954 Super duty
- 05973 Perfect it II
- 05928 Finesse it II
- and wax.

Only those 2 bottles arrived. So they are 2 of those 3, but which ones, and the 3rd one I'll need to order again.
