Hey guys, I am working on my boat and had my engine compression tested "did great"- rebuilt carb, did plugs, wires etc. "1979 correct craft 351", when I had it started it sounded great, then I put it in gear while sitting there in yard and the tranny whined pretty dang loud.
what could that be? was thinking where prop pole goes out the back of boat? |

Did you wet/soap down the cutlass bearing for lubrication?

The cutlass bearing is the rubber bushing inside the strut. It's water lubricated and if dry and the prop shaft is rotating it will squeal. The strut is the prop shaft support just forward of the prop. If you want to put the boat in gear on land, you need to wet/soap the cutlass for lubrication.

Harry, Is your "boat guy" familiar with inboards? Sounds like he's an I/O guy! Yes on the soapy water. Just wet down the shaft forward of the strut and the mix will run into the cutlass. |

Yeah they do boat types of boats. when I was going through it and listening to what he had to say , he mentioned that noise and had some type of rubber looking tube and advised I use that to stop the noise..... it looked like window caulking /tube for a house.
wont be going there again. |

Harry, I think somethings been lost in the translation! If you see him again, ask him to explain it to you again. How about some pictures of the boat? |

Here is a shot of a strut. Obviously the boat is upside down but you should get the picture. Prop shaft is also missing. I use liquid dish soap to lube the shaft where it meets up with the strut. Soak it down pretty good. Limit you in gear time to a minimum and keep the RPM's down also. Squeal is normal with a dry bearing.

Especially when you get to the stringers. I'm concerned that you mention the rear replacement as in you are only going to replace the aft ends of the stringers? |

It looks to me like the ones on the sides are the bad ones. truthfully I don't even know if I could do that type of work.
day job is a compliance analyst and off time I build/ work on cars and motorcycles. have read a few articles here...don't know how to get a stringer to fit much less the floor "pretty sure it has to be cut at an angle" or something. |

So you’re just replacing the rear secondary stringers that make up the floor structure?
Sounds like with a little help you could be a better boat mechanic than your “boat mechanic”. Welcome. |
