How did they start this new engine? Your old starter could not work?
My guess is they knew full well what they did because they had to swap starters before it ran. |

Ian, Was it ever confirmed who made the "miscommunication"? I'm sorry to hear they talked you into the LH solution. What was the incentive they made for you to make what I feel was the wrong decision? However, I'm happy to hear that at least one person at Tommy's knew that the trans could be indexed. I wonder if any of their "techs" have ever done an indexing! |

Hopefully this advice was absorbed before making your decision, it is pretty much spot on. The only thing I’ll clarify (and I’m sure joe would agree) is that the 1.23 trans (which would mate your LH engine to a RH prop) would be a terrific option from a performance and reliability perspective... only downside is the cost. You can put me squarely in the camp against using a LH prop, I’ve owned one and driven many, they handle poorly IMHO. |

Ian, I agree with Gary. Who called CC? Tommy's? What LH prop are they going to give you? |

I ordered a starter with the engine, The old starter needed to be replaced. Yes they knew full well that they were installing a LH engine the whole time, they were under the impression that that is what I wanted - although I don't know how since I gave them the right part numbers |

That is the easiest solution for Tommy's to deal with. Hopefully, you'll be happy with the way it drives. It'll give you a story to tell every time someone admires your boat and asks why you converted it to a lefty.

I really don't know where the miscommunication happened. When I discovered the problem the shop seemed to believe that I requested a LH engine, and it wasn't until I produced an email with the old engine identification placard that they admitted there was an error. They didn't talk me into it. They offered it as a possible solution, I told them not to touch it until I had time to research it, and then I would let them know how I wanted it fixed. I made the decision based on the pros outweighing the cons for ME. No incentives were offered. The rep tried to tell me I would need to buy the prop, so I very quickly told him that their mistake will be costing me nothing, the service manager came out to talk and confirmed that they will eat all costs. |

I appreciate all the info, and I did take it into consideration. I am content with my decision, I'm aware of the cons of value depreciation and non-standard build, starboard listing, handling, etc. No plans to sell, and LH will fit my needs fine. |

Oh, I just thought about this, does my alternator need to be changed as well?

Technically the fins on the alternator should be changed, but not sure if it's really necessary. LH drives can be easier dock.

No need to change anything on the alternator.
PCM used the same alternator with the same cooling fan/fins for either rotation. They only list one part number for the fan. For example if you have a Prestolite, there's one fan number regardless of direction. If it's a Mando, only one part number for the fan regardless of direction. Like Bruce mentioned some alternators have directional fans, not yours though. |

I'm firmly in the camp that says that no matter what hull you have and what rotation you have, moving weight around will have an effect on the ride attitude.

There is no doubt, but all I can say in my 2001 when it had a LH engine I found myself driving from a knee on the passenger seat regularly, same boat after converted to a RH prop with a trans/shaft/prop swap and the same usage and I haven't driven from the passenger seat in the 8+ years since. Of course my weight does fluctuate quite a bit... Id take a LH engine over no engine to be sure but anyone saying they are equal in this application is blowin a bit of smoke even if they work today at the company that made that boat 30 years ago . |

I haven't taken an exact count on the LH/RH opinions but it sure seem the overwelming is for going RH. In fact, I may be wrong but remember only one saying the LH won't matter! |

When I head out in the boat by myself, I take my inflatable doll for movable ballast.
Since air doesn't weigh much, we fill her with jello to add some weight Some days I dress her in a white long sleeved shirt and a white wig. |

Come to think of it, Quinner did tell me she was well broken in and went both ways I just figured she didn't care if the boat was LH or RH rotation. |

No, I started this thread because I blew my engine. I ordered all the right stuff, and the shop made a mistake. I sought advice regarding the "broken transmission" and y'all were able to diagnose and help me identify a huge *************** up. I sought opinions, and experiences, and weighed them all, and then made a decision for myself and my situation. Since then I have been sharing my experience with y'all, as it seems many of you are curious about the outcome. |

Well, tomorrow is the day that I'm supposed to get the boat back. We shall see if the shop can make this timeline, and how they handle this massive screw up

Good luck man. Look real close at everything like mounts, hose clamps, cable ties etc. When a mechanic (or anybody for that matter) has to do something the second time less care is generally taken. The little detail things don't get done. So take a real good look. Keep an eye on the shaft seal, make sure its not leaking or getting hot or wobbling.
Enjoy your Fathers Day weekend. |

I'd go as far as checking strut/shaft/engine alignment. I don't have a strong feeling about Tommy's "techs". |
