Hi all,
I've just purchased a 1993 SNOB and I'm about to do a full rebuild on the motor. Its 5.8 351W reverse rotation motor and it looks like they either badly overheated it or there was a small fire in the top of the motor at one point. As a result, my engine spec tag is melted along with the sleeves of most of the wires. I want to make a new harness for it but I'm hesitating to do it without the proper diagram. I'm also looking for any tips on a rebuild like this that someone has done before; things to watch out for, etc. Does anyone have any helpful info?? |

Welcome Len. The question I have is how are you sure you have a reverse rotation if the tag is gone. Back then your boat could have either but both turned the prop to the right. One was done with a reverse rotation engine the other was done with the trans. Do you have a Velvet Drive or a PCM trans would be the clue

Hi Gary,
I have the Warner Velvet 1:1 tranny which was my clue that I had the reverse rotation. The other give away was that when I originally tried to fire it up, it started spitting fuel out of the top of carb, It became clear that the previous owner had put the wrong starter on it in an effort to get it going. I installed a reverse starter and then she started to fire. |

I would start with something like this gotomarine universal harness It aint cheap and likely you will need to modify an end or two but itll be mostly what you need |

Or if you’re handy, just buy a double ended (10’) 8-pin pigtail from SkiDIM and run the wires per the schematic. Have done this myself. The non-protec stuff is very simple.

How about the refference section. The 94 may work. |

Or..........if your 8 plug connector is in good shape, you wouldn't even need to buy the pigtail, just some 10 and 12 gauge wires of the appropriate colors to keep things easy to follow. You could use this diagram that was made by TRBenj and like he said it's pretty easy to do. The diagram is for an engine with the newer Ford PMGR starter which yours should have since it's a 93. Note 1 in the legend in the lower right really should say "For Ford solenoid type starter (2 wires) to match what's written by the starter If it turns out that you have the older style starter, there's another diagram that'll be better. And it's for the original alternator also |
