Lake Horse, the answer to your question is yes. You can use your voltage guage. As a matter of fact, you won't even have to change the wiring of your existing voltage guage. I will say though that for applications that require a long charging circuit (a long lead wire from alternator to battery) it is better to use a 3 wire type alternator. 3 wire alternators offer remote voltage sensing which compensates for voltage drops through the charging circuit wiring. Sorry for hyjacking this thread but electrical systems are my specialty.

Thanks nutty, I just wanted to check because the OEM Alternator was a 4 wire and I just couldn't see how I could get away with using a one wire setup. Thanks for the info.

The voltage guage only needs 2 connections to work.... 1 positive and 1 negative. The positive side connects to the hot (ign) side of the ignition switch (hot when key is in run position) and the negative side connects to ground. Ground can be the neg side of the batt or it can be the engine block or it can be a ground bus (which is grounded to the engine block via a black wire). Many times the grounds (or neg) of all guages are daisy chained together with one common wire going back to the engine block.
The only connection that the one wire alternator needs is: one hot (red lead usually 10 or 12 gage) from the Batt (+) side of the alt to the heavy red Batt cable on your starter solenoid switch. Don't forget to put a circuit breaker in between. Let me know if more help is needed. I can give you my number if you'd like to call for more information. Brian |

Thanks Brian, That's exactly what I needed to know. I just received the new alternator today and I will install it on Saturday. Hopefullly there should be no problem with the install. But if I do hit a snag I will send you a post on monday. Thanks again for all your help. I really appreciate it.

Lake Horse,I dont like a ammeter, the reason being all the voltage, amperage must travel that long path to and from that guage. If the guage goes bad ,no return path to battery. Also the danger of fire ,old wires, bad connection, high resistance.
one of the many reasons they are no longer used to monitor the charging system.Battery or volt meters do a much better job, with less chance a malfunction,fire......boat dr |

Lake Horse,
Summit has a good selection of oem look alikes.Don't know what you have now ,but this may be a good time to upgrade .I went with a complete set of the Auto Meter, they were real close to oem .But if you replace them all only the purist will notice the upgrade...............boat dr |

Besides the gauges, is there anything else that I need to get for the upgrade?

That should be all you need,If you will set tight for a couple of days, I will sell you mine, less than 6 months old.It is a 100 amp unit.
Removing timing cover, circulating pump, belt driven raw water pump, and going with a smaller size alternator. She is on a diet. I will be using a crank driven raw water pump, want to move alt.lower on the engine.Space issues dictate a smaller size,Jap import perhaps. |

Matt, I agree with Boat Dr. 100% about changing the ammeter out for a voltage gage. I was under the impression that you were already using one. That will free your wiring harness up of a lot of heavy wire and make your charging circuit more reliable. Good to hear you got your alternator working.
