Man did i screw up, driving our shop car back in forth to work..1999 vw passat and blew the belt at about 90 mph.. just pulled the 5 valve per cylinder head and found 12 valves bent over.
I dont practice what i preach, it was supposed to be changed at 60k and i let it slide to 93 1500.00 f-up Eric |

ehhh... thats never fun. Good to see that since it was so much over from when you should have changed it, you were taking it easy on it. Sorry to hear about that though.

Seems like we should be able to do better than 1500 for a handy guy like yourself, looks like 500 for a reman from Tristate

Eric I would give that guy the friends and family deal. I don't think you need to charge him the dummy fee, I think he learned his lesson.
On a serious note sorry to hear about the break down. Hope you get it fixed soon. |

Get an interference free engine. One that the pistons and valves don't occupy the same space. I know that some suzuki's are like that, the timing belt breaks, it just quits.

mazada and nizzan are the same way. Interference motors are no fun unless you stay after them. High priced to fix also.

1.8 turbo heads bring a premium Joe, the cheapest one i found was $700.00 the only thing is .....bent valves too
I'll pull the valves and check the head, if it isnt damaged I'll order valves. anywhere else they want $1200.00 swapped. head set 140.00 new bolts 40.00. If this what a boat topic it would read....I shouldve checked my alignment |

I dont know what tristate's policy on cores is and whether or not they are going to charge you because yours has bent valves, but 500 from them sounds like a pretty good deal, worst case they charge you a couple hundred for the valves? I would give them a call the GT40ps I got from them were top notch work completely remanned with new components and larger stainless valves they were still cheaper than most places used.

Joe, my buddy has a 1.8 out of the same year bug with a warped head, i grabbed it this morning and everything is the same, Im removing the valves as we speak, im also going to use his cams cause my intake cam is wiped along with the lifters. I had to by a 50.00 special socket to get the head off.
thanks for the info though. |

Nice, I hate to see anyone who can turn a wrench retail for such things, mechanics have to make a living but the mark ups on parts at every level really gets me going sometimes.

What's with people doing this to there VW's? A girl I work with just broke her timing belt on a 4 motion Passat wagon and she let the dealer put a new motor in it with out getting a second opinion. The bill was $5800.00! My wife and I love her VW car, but we have always changed the timing belts around 80k and never had a problem.

Thats also why all the little escorts disappeared. Ford sold bajillions of them, but every eighty thou they frag. They are rarer on the road than original beatles, it seams.

Eric, Don't throw those valves away. My wifes a sculptor, if she see's those things the wheels in her head will start spinning and we'll have a new "piece" to display.

farvacasso,
i'll send them if she wants them 81. i googled vw 1.8 turbo engine seems there is a class action law suit, I opened the maintanance section and it says replace at 60k, pretty cut and dry, seems to be an epidemic with the belt thing...i think there's a conspiracy. Im kinda glad it happened now, i had a major oil leak on the return side of the turbo from the heat cracking a plastic pipe, replaced all the belts and plugs, replaced both cams from lack of oil because the dipstick cap was broke (another common problem) allowing the dipstick to go down farther in the pan. |

Eric, This is gonna sound a little strange but I'm going to email you with my UPS account number. If you could put em in a box and send them out that would be cool. Give her a little time and we'll see what she comes up with.
I've got it way too easy, some guys have to buy their wives diamonds all I need is some bent valves and I'm good to go. I asked her what she wanted for her birthday a few years ago and she said "an arc welder" I love that woman. |

Eric, the Germans seem to over engineer most everything they produce.
I think that was part of the reason for the loss of TWO WARS.......... As far as the class action suit, these are my veiws: They will attack from WITHIN.......... Their weapons; BMW,Porche,VW KNOCK KNOCK boat dr |

Alan: I know just what you mean. Mrs. jbear is not fond of diamonds or anything else like that. She just wants to make sure we have what we need for the boat. Plus she looks good wet in a bathing suit and is a awesome driver. She really thought it was cool that Reid brought me GT40 heads. Man I love her.

Boat doc, after having that cluster fk apart and all the sht involved, i was afraid to fire it, with a VW i hope its normal to have a handful of bolts left over lol
I drove it home yesterday, gritting teeth, and curled toes though after reading all the forums on the VW Passats and VW of America, I think the car will get a new owner sometime in the near future, VW has really had problems with sludge and the engines siezing and if you dont produce every single oil change reciept they wont warranty it. I read hundreds of complaints on this problem. I got the car from someone elses mis-fortunes and have to deal with it as for ever buying one again..no thanks |

Gottaski I have 4 ford escorts, they all run well. They all have 120k or better on them. The high milage one has 229k on it still runs like it should. Ford put a 1.9L non interfirence motor in most of them starting in 1991. The only escorts with interfirence motors from 91-96 were the escort GT. Same prob, don't change timing belt every 70k and your taking your chances.
Escorts are making a come back right now with the price of gas. They used to be $500 beaters. Now they go for a $1,000. thats if it's rusty. Good shape one is $1500 easy. |
