Wendy and I just happen to be in the neighborhood of Fontana Wi. So we took some pics of these cool boats . By the time we got there , there was between 40-50 boats Im guessing . I dont know a lot about them . I do know the first one is brand new one made by Gage-Hacker,26 foot with a Mercruiser and a v-drive with a velvet drive . This boat will set you back about 300,000 clams.!!!!

notice copper color on all the things that are normaly chrome

I have more if you want to see them .

Pat, Thanks! I'm glad someone was thinking about getting pictures. I was too but my son was in from school for the weekend and I needed to get him out of bed because he wanted to go with. Running late and just ran out the door. I had even charged two sets of batteries!

Greg, There are several with blue bench seats. The new Gage Hacker with the 350 Merc, The 1920 Swedish launch, the pre war Chris utility and the Chris Capri (runabout). Which one?

Pete, do you remember my story about the old Sheppard I hauled for my old boss? anyways we put it on the flat bed bacerds and at about 65 mph i seen the windshield go flying in the rear view. I almost got fired from that job about 40 times because of things like this, one other story that sparks my memory was i was working at the Cleveland Grand prix on stand by in case one of the gen-sets failed, i was in a company pick up and i decided to shuttle people up into downtown, it was a long walk and i think i was charging 3 or 4 bucks a person, i ended up asking the VP's son if he needed a ride for a couple bucks and he told me who he was....he got the ride for free.. i sorta got in trouble

Greg, I'll get some specs on the boat when I get home and can look up all the details. The Capri was a very popular model and Chris made lots of them. The most unusual was the 57 that had white tail fins to match the 57 cars!!

Eric, So you have been "wheeling and dealing" from a early age!!

the windshield set the owner back 5 grand, i got in trouble in 2nd grade for selling my own raffle tickets that i made up, i think thats when it all started.

I always thought the lines on the one chris couldnt be matched, even today, the way it swoops in by the transom, that is real art

A number of years ago, I went to the Minneapolis Boat Show. There was an old woody up there that was about 30' long. It was a custom made one of a kind for some famous rich guy that I don't remember now. The only thing I do rememeber is that it had a V12 airplane engine in it that I think was out of a P51 Mustang. It was gunned at over 60MPH and was the prettiest thing I've ever seen. Maybe Pete knows something about this boat and can check my lack of memory. Anyway it was very cool and also worth a LOT of money.

By the way, whatever that 9 Flyer is above is unbelieveable. That thing is awesome.

Eddie, Don't know exactly which boat you saw because there were quite a few. The Liberty engine was used extensively in racing because it was cheap surplus after the war.

Here's the description;
The Packard 4M-2500 engine was utilized in all U.S. Navy World War II PT boats. This engine was based on the 1925 Liberty aircraft engine which was earlier converted for marine use in racing boats. During the war the Packard engine went through various performance updates and modifications. With early engines rated at 1100 h.p. and progressing to 1500 h.p. during the war. The Packard 4M-2500 engine was a supercharged, water cooled, gasoline powered V-12 engine, weighing approximately 2900 pounds.

Here's the picture:

We don't want Reid to see this!! He'd have one in a Mustang to see if he could out run Marshall!!

The 9 Flyer is a Ventnor reproduction. (it's new)   67 Nautique 312, Does the engine in it look familiar?

Wow Pete, thanks. Kinda brings new meaning to the term "power to weight ratio" doesn't it? Still 1100 HP in a boat!!!! That would get some attention.

The boat that I saw I keep thinking had a Rolls Royce V12 in it. Is that a possibility Pete or am I not recalling something correctly? Which would not be the first time.

Eric, That's 1500 HP at about 3000 RPM. No reduction gearing required and I think they were swinging 18 or 20" props! I don't think you could get the torque they produced through a PCM ether!

Eddie, I do remember something about Rolls Royce and will do some research. I do know that there were a lot of car manufacturers making the Liberty engine. It was one of the first engines with interchangeable parts. I do think Rolls was making them as well.

Eddie, I can't find a specific boat with the Rolls engine. One of my nice hard cover books on old wood race boats is up north on my coffee table. I do however have some more info. The Rolls Royce "Merlin" V12 was used in the P51's. It wasn't as popular a engine for a boat as the Liberty but it was used. I'll get up north over Christmas and see what boats are in that book.

Yum I believe you guys are off on the v-12 motor.. packard.. what ever your guess was.

P51 - air plane

PT= boat = what Kenndy cruised around in.

What was very commonly used in speedboat's/early hydroplanes was a V-16 Rolls-Royce engine that was twin turbo charged and out of the P51 airplane WWII fighter.

I believe Pete was asking about the earlier Paragons, alot of these boats utilized whats called over center clutches that would knuckle into forward and alot of times you would apply and hold pressure on the lever for reverse, after the normally dry clutch the power was transmissted into a gear set (mechanical) like what you see on the back of the Packard, the landing craft used them and im sure anything else of that era used mechanical means to turn the prop. hydraulic boat transmissions came along exactly when, I dont know. If i had to guess it would be the early to mid 60's
