Eric,

I have been hearing what I believe is a bad damper plate on my 23' Cuddy, OMC 350 with a BW 1:1. I have read several posts and I have the engine in good tune, and the trans seem to operate fine. I get a nasty grinding noise at idle but it goes away just above idle.

I have brought the boat home for the season and yesterday pulled the trans out. I can not see any broken springs on the damper plate, there might be a slight bit of slop between the damper plate and the splines on the trans. The trans fluid looks dark maroon and smells OK. Before I pulled the trans out I ran the boat in the driveway and could hold the prop shaft with my bare hands.

What do you think, do I need to have you look at the trans while I have out or can I just replace the damper plate and be good to go?

I would say replace the damper, while the trans is out go through it and re-seal including internal seals, that way you are 100 percent sure there is not a problem in the trans. a bad damper will open the clutch teeth if it has been failing.
if you dont mind pulling transmissions just try the damper

I'm Confused! You could hold it and stop it? If so, then Eric does need to look at it!!

Pete, I should have been more clear, while in neutral.

Eric, how busy are you? I really do not want to try this myself, I want to make certain that the trans. is OK because I do not want to have to pull it out again

you'll get a little oil shear out of the water on the prop it will turn at times and alot also depends on forward clutch pack clearance, the true test is you should be able to hold the shaft at 1200 rpm's, being very careful,

And I was complaining about pulling that little BW out of my C nautique. Can't imagine trying to work in one of those engine compartments, I know the 27' Sea Ray I owned was not very easy to access anything on. They ran hoses and wires across the only space to stand on. Good Luck
