Thanks Bruce ! Trailer is functionally great but black paint hides a lot of stuff. It’s next on the list as I acquired a lift and canopy for our open spot last fall. It’s still sporting the original nautical rubber flaps so why not. Ken, very envious of your test rig. I was dreaming up something like that with all my thoughts on If this 40 year old unused transmission was going to work ha. |

If you do make one up like Kens, be careful not to run it for very long. There's no bearing at the front end of the trans so it's not designed for any side loads on the input shaft. I would suggest coupling it directly to the motor. If you want variable speed, then use a 3 phase motor driven by a VFD. Eric always chucked them up in his engine lathe. |

What's that thing called in the center of the forward and reverse adapter that supports the input shaft? B/W calls it a needle bearing. There's a whole whopping maybe 2 1/2 inches of beefy shaft in front of that bearing. |

Hah Gary, I remember Foxfire Marine & Mike D. Back in the day he did some work on my 77' in that old Quonset Hut. IIRC some years later he ended up at Skipper Buds/Chicago Sea Ray for a stint.
Don't all tranny's still have shafts? |

You’d have to do some sort of motor that had speeds available to direct couple. If I’m not incorrect most industrial motors (compressor wise anyhow) are either 1750 or 3250 rpm units. Slam that baby into gear.
Quinner considered a full rebuilt at some point I bet. |

Little update on the 90 for anyone interested.
Lots of work happened this winter. The gel was much worse than it looked and we needed to sand very aggressively down to 320 on the wet sand and the process of bringing it back from that took a while. All I can say is there is a ton more surface area on a BFN vs a 2001 when it comes to sanding. The finished product turned out excellent (Photos below). The graphics that went back on were to mimic the 1990 brochure. If the boat wouldn't have been put back to its headliner condition I likely would have darkened the main lettering up to match the charcoal secondary stripe. I had to bite the bullet and pay 120 bucks for double roll of the correct size pin for the bottom. Luckily, the company that I found that could do it for me used some really nice vinyl and the color match was a 100% match to original. The boat didn't need much on the inside so just a quick buff up on the deck to remove some haze. The NOS 72C has been a great success. I had my doubts about it sitting that long as far as seals and such go but the thing has performed flawlessly. We are around 80-85 hours for the season on it. It's had a big year so far. Its crowning achievement was pulling the Deep Rudders to our first legitimate Buckethead podium finish (3rd place) and our fastest time we've ever turned in for the race.    |

Nice job and congratulations to the Rudders on their 3rd place.
I’ve been to quite a few of the buckethead races and the competition is legit, there are some FAST teams that practice together all year. The Rudders come from all over the creation and may practice together maybe once or twice and to capture third place is one heck of an accomplishment. My hats off to you gents congrats again. Zach that clip of the beginning of the race shows how the ‘90 was hauling the mail that thing was smoked the field. Great job.
