attention upholstery gurus

The deluxe interior rear seat in my 88 had an almost rotten seat base. The skin and foam were in really good shape so i was able to remove the staples and get all of the foam and skin off of the old seat base and will be able to re-use the foam and skin on the new seat base that i'm finishing up this week.

I'm anticipating a problem and am hoping some of you guys with upholstery experience can help me wiht this.

The first photo I'm attaching is a pic of the actual boat with seat showing the seat bottom. I've painted a circle around a vinyl seam that runs side to side on the seat base.



My question is:
What keeps the seam in place? That is, there's good foam definition from the flatter foam that covers most of the seat vs. the hump toward the edge of the seat. Is there someway that the seam is tacked/glued into that foam indention? It seems that when I put the skin back on my new seat bottom, that if the skin isn't placed just right, the seam will be pulled up too tight and will not look right.

I'm attaching this second photo as it more clearly shows a seat bottom and the indention/seam I'm referring to.



Any help or solutions are appreciated.

Ok Dave, So the flap will staple down to the seat bottom? It sounds like you're saying work from the rear of the seat to the front of the seat. Is that right? Does it matter?

Yes Steve work from the rear forward. Because you want the flap to be even with the back piece of foam. When you pull the flap pull it down so the cover is flush with the foam.
