i owen a 68 mustang and the pole is missing.i dont understand how it is installed.the only thing i see is a ring glassed into the hull?can anyone explain? pic or info would be apreaited.

Steve,
I installed several pylons back in the late 60's early 70's while working at a CC dealership. The pylons in most cases were dealer installed. Sometimes the mounts were glassed into the bilge from the factory at the keel and sometimes they weren't. The pylon then simply went through a hole in the floor. Sometimes the hole in the floor was even there and just covered over by the floor vinyl. Later hulls were coming through with a 2x6 between the main stringers under the floor for some extra reinforcement.

How are your stringers? If they have never been replaced, it will be a major concern.

well what i have is just a ring that stands verticle. mabey i need to see the pole to understand how i atach it. the ring i see is glassed into the floor from the factory i asume. is there more than one part?douse the pole atach to the ring i see? is there a book that i can get to show how it is assembled? thank u for your help. my goal is to fix it to be stock.

i am pulling up the plywood in aprill to inspect the stringers. what i can see they seem fine but i need to get a good look. the ring i am talking about i can see infront of the mouter.under the floor glassed to the hull. i am concerned why someone would take the pole out

I remember someone having a picture that may give you a better idea. We'll see if they chime in but let me explain further. The ring at the keel accepts a male pin at the bottom of the pylon. This connection is cross drilled connected. The hole in floor is simply a hole. There is no connection to the pylon at that point. The pylon simply "floats" in the hole.

Take a look through the diaries. There are a few pictures that show pylons but regretably only above the floor level. At least it will give you a idea of the pylon style. In a 68, the chances are good that it would have been a stepped style made up from different diameter pipes welded together.

still alitle confused i think i need to see a pole and then it will probley make sence to me. can u think of any problem that would make someone remove the pole? could the ring in the keel be week? it seems to be fine when i look at it. i cant move it with my hand but that is not equil to pulling someone out of the watter. i cant stop asking my self y it was taken out. thanks for any imput

The pylons were optional. Sorry I didn't make it clear when I told you they were dealer installed.

Strength? Many a skier(s) were pulled by that set up!!!

Actually it's Billy's pole now.   I sold the pole and bilge bracket to him.

The bilge bracket should look like two rings, side by side.
To accept this pic in the next post since I clicked on the wrong reply for posting pics.

that is a surprise to me! i asumed all cc had a pylon. it makes sence because nothing looked worn.i would have never thought that it simply never had one.lol thanks you have been alot of help

The picture that Al (drCC) posted is the pylon style that fits a clevis type bracket glassed to the keel. 68 would be around the transition of a bracket change. You ether have the clevis or just the later style round female socket that accepts the round shank of the pylon bottom.

i would have to say i have the cleves typ that takes the 7/16 brass bolt because the hole in the bracket is horazontal not verdical but thanks for the info now i no there are 2 typs

Both styles are bolted at the keel!! That's what keeps the pylon in the boat.

Steve,
The early clevis style will look like two "ears" sticking out of the glass as shown in this picture at the top.



The later style will just look like a short piece of pipe sticking out from the keel like this except with the cross drilled hole.

Here are some pics of my 73 Skier's pylon in various stages.
Before removing it. Might be different than yours not sure.

After removing the pylon and the metal reinforcement plate. Looking at the bottom of the pylon with the male pin that goes into the bracket mounted to the hull.


Temp back in the boat


Close up of the socket in the hull. Pylon slides into this and a bolt goes through to hold it in place.(There is no wood under there so dont try to pull it up like I did.


Took a while but finally got these apart


Metal plate refurbished and bolted to the new floor


Almost done!

i have the early style cleves typ. i cant wait to start working on my boat unfortatly i dont have a place to work that isnt covered in snow!thanks to every one for the lesson it has been very helpfull.

i love my boat!!! i am hoping the stringers r ok. i will not know till i take up the floor and inspect. i am not in a rush and i am willing to do whatever it takes to restore this boat.i think it is a good project boat with a lot of potental.i have restored a 69 firebird and a 51 hd panhead but this mustang ss has me really excited. i will keep u posted. thanks again

Cool boat- not many Mustang SS's around. Where did you find it? I never saw it pop up for sale publicly (craigslist, ebay, etc).

Ive got my fingers crossed for you, but you may want to prepare for the worst. My sister's '69 Mustang had one one stringer with minor rot, and another that consisted of soupy sawdust in a thin fiberglass shell. If youve got a plywood floor, then its been replaced at least once before- the original configuration would have been glass over foam.

Edit: Did you buy this boat? Mustang SS in Columbus, OH The seats look to be the same... I never realized that boat had a blue deck. Or is it the lighting in your pictures?

yes i did buy my mustang in OH. it was advertised in culombas but it was acually in haskings a litle north west.i toed it home thrue the mountins of PA in a snow storm and had to change the axile to the trailer also in a snow storm.i was lucky i was able to find one on a sat afternoon.i think that it was ment to be in ct and i can get through any problems i find if i do my research and take my time.
i am consideing pulling the engine and doing the stringers just so i know it is right. i will see wha happens. the plywood has been replaced and it is not soft but it needs to come up so i can inspect.the boat has a lot going for it and i will have fun fixing it up.
