Hey,
I'm new to the site. My name is Brady and I hail from Newton, IA. Just picked up a 1970 CC Torino and I'm trying to get it sea-worthy again. It's been sitting for the better part of the decade so I'm working through the usual wiring and fuel issues. I have a few questions. -How do I change the oil? It's got a 302 and from what I understand I'm supposed to suck it up through the dipstick tube correct? -I need to flush out and drain the fuel tank. Are there provisions for that or am I going to have to be inventive? -What are guys using to supply water to the RWP? I don't care for the fake a lake idea. Can I just pull the suction hose, lay it in the bilge, flood the bilge and run it that way or is something like the fake a lake the only way to go? -Where can I find a RWP impeller for it? -How rare are these boats? I can't seem to find much information on them. I found a Ford 302/351 service manual from Pleasurecraft Marine. Is that what I've got? -How about the rudder and prop shaft stuffing boxes. Is there anything that needs to be done to them before it hits the water after sitting for so long? I'm new to boats so I'd appreciate some patience. Thanks in advance, can't wait to get it out on the water. Brady. |

Brady,
Welcome to CCfan and CC ownership. Yes, you'll need to suck the oil out. There are several vac pumps that are available. They come with different size tubing so you can match the ID of your dip stick tube. There are no provisions for draining the tank. You'll need to siphon out the old or even pull the tank to drain it. For water, don't flood the bilge. Stick the suction hose to the RWP in a bucket and then keep water from the garden hose running filling the bucket. The alternate is to stick the garden hose directly into the suction hose of the RWP. Just be careful that you have enough water so the RWP doesn't overcome the supply. The draw back to this method is due to the pressure from the garden hose, you will not get a good indication that the RWP is working properly. Check out Jamestown distributing for the impeller. The model # of the RWP should be stamped on the machined surface of the body where the cover fits. If not, you'll need to go by dimensions. Jamestown will have a cross refference chart. You should have a Holman Moody engine that uses a crank driven RWP. We do not have a H/M manual in the reference section but one of or members may have one. However, the manual you did find will work. For the stuffing boxes, wait until it's in the water to see if they need tightening or repacking. Keep in mind you do need the prop shaft packing to drip some water. It's water lubricated. BTW, that hull is known to have bad issues with stringer rot. Have you done any checking on yours? |

Brady - It's great to have another Iowan join CCF!
Good luck on your new boat. Where are you going to use it? I am in Waterloo area. |

Welcome Brady. Here are a couple of pictures,I'm assuming
you have a Holman Moody with a Jabsco pump. The cover pic is from my original and has the model numbers stamped in. The impeller is the replacement, it has a spline drive. I also have a HM owners/parts manual but it is very basic but if you have any questions just ask. |

I haven't checked the stringers yet. The floor and all of the visible wood appears to be solid. I'm new to the boating world, how do I go about checking them? I ordered some parts to get it running, should be here later this week but I'm 4-wheeling over the weekend so I doubt I'll have time to mess with it until next week. I plan on putting it in at Red Rock mostly, it's only about a 20 minute drive from home. I'll ask questions as they come up. Thanks guys!

I can't seem to get the photo uploader to work. I'll have to host them somewhere and link to them. Bear with me.

Brady,
I don't know why you are having issues. It works for me but I use photobucket since it automatically resizes for me. |

What error message are you getting when you try?

I love those Torinos, wouldn't mind having one just for a cruising around boat.
Jeff (connorssons) would be a wealth of knowledge I'm sure since he has like 40 separator/tornios. First thing everyone is going to tell you is to lose the rubber hose and filter between the fuel pump and carb. You need a hard line or USCG approved flex line. What you got is a fire hazard. |

Yeah, the p.o. did some hokey stuff to it. Have parts to re-do the fuel delivery system. Should I be fine with just the mechanical fuel pump? The p.o. has an inline electric pump wired in before the mech pump and I don't know why. Presumably he's using it as a "booster" for whatever reason.

David I wonder how it got away from Jeff? Looks like an HM don't it? with some automotive changes? I can still see the heater outlet on the manifold. Brady can you post a picture looking down on the front of the engine. Looks in nice shape, you'll have a nice ride when done.

Yeah Jeff let that one slip by didn't he
HM.... well the valve covers look right. The thermo housing looks like mine except I can't tell if it has an HM on it. I don't know what that T is in the manifold hose. Manifolds are obviously not HM. Yeah a pic a little lower down would help. I just use a mechanical pump on mine. Don't know why you would have a mechanical and electric, sounds weird to me. |

It needs a little fine-tuning. Delete some of the cobbled up BS and make it right again. Other than that it appears to be solid and usable. I do a lot of rock crawling which keeps me pretty busy, I haven't done anything with the boat at all this week. Maybe I'll get it back into the garage when I get back from wheeling Sunday. I've got a big box of stuff from Summit Racing to install.

With something this old that has changed hands a few times it's hard to tell what's been changed. I'm not after authenticity (sp?) as much as a good running, solid boat to take the family out on. It'd be nice to know more about the history though. The P.O. made a few changes but by and far, it's mechanically identical to the way it was when he bought it. As far as what the P.O. before him did, who knows right?

The boat looks great but yes, you'll need some engine work. I'd get that electric fuel pump off and find out if the mechanical still works. T a pressure gauge into the line running to the carb and see what it puts out.
Checking your stringers can be as simple as tapping them with a light hammer where ever you can. A dull sound will indicate the glass is coming off and most likely due to water intrusion/rot. Core samples can also be taken with a small hole saw. The hole saw itself will remove the glass so you can take a look at the wood while the pilot drill will remove wood deeper so you can take a look at it. Set the pilot bit real shallow since I believe your hull only has 3/4" ply for stingers. Actually they are starboard to port ribs forward of the engine. |

The plumbing and valve covers look more like an interceptor to me.

I was thinking the same but having a hard time deciding. Look at the T stat housing - looks like a H/M??? What about those manifolds. I've never seen a set like them before. Have you? What ever, it's a mixed set of parts! |

It kind of looked like a mixed bag to me as well, even with my limited knowledge. I only gave $700 for it so I can't ask for too much. It's definitely not unmolested.

The manifolds are aftermarket Barrs or oscos. The interceptor and hm stat housings are very similar. The telltale sign of an interceptor is the t'd off connection on the right. Where's the rwp?
