QUOTE=Bakchose]
+1

Being opening Gay and a member of this sight since 2004 this has offically become offensive. Isn't this why there is an off topic forum? Thank you for reinforcing why I've never attended a reunion.[/QUOTE]

This is amoung the most intolerant statements I have seen on this site. There are lots of people here I disagree with, but not one that I would not look forward to having a beer with or meeting at a reunion.

I you too CQ! LOL

As for Bakchose - your choice is your choice and I don't think 1.) anyone knew or cared, and 2.) would intentionally bash you for it. I think you just opened up your own can of worms with your comment and maybe were a little oversensitive? Anyhoo, I hope you stick around and continue to share our love of everything that is CC.

The only thing he's intolerant of is Japanese automobiles. Attend a reunion or not, the choice is yours.

Maybe there is something wrong with the wiring in my brain. Is this some kind of private joke. I have no clue what you are talking about?

Lets just blame my brain wiring at this point. Hopefully fixed.

Bakchose ownes a CC, Thats what the events are centered around so I would hope that would bring him to an event and other things wouldn't push him away.

The events are about the sport, the boats, and of course the beers.

IMHO It matters more that he drives a CC. I'm sure we would be less tolerent of a MC or Malibu owner!!!

I think the point is we don't need to be "tolerant" of anyone here. To say I'm tolerant of someone because of their political views, ethnicity, sexual preference, or other is kind of demeaning. John's a guy with a CC. I'm a guy with a CC. So is everyone else here. End of story.

If you honestly think that John (aka Bakchose) is "intolerant" or "oversensitive" then I would suggest that perhaps it is the other way around.

Based on the insensitive comments here and in the original thread I would say that some of you "just don't get it."

Do you know what it means to be in the "majority culture"? Have you ever thought about how your written and spoken words sound to other people? Have you never been stung by a joke somebody made about you? It can be a lot worse when they don't even know that they've just cut you down... Don't tell me you've never been in a group of people making fun of religion, politics, ethnic groups, hobbies, mental retardation, a disease, etc. that didn't hit a little too close to home. Now imagine how welcome you'd feel if this was happening over the internet. Do you really think you'd feel comfortable going to a meeting knowing that the majority of people there don't think twice about making you the butt of their jokes?

Oh sure, "But I wasn't talking about John specifically. He is a nice guy, after all, he owns a CC! We're all in this together, I didn't mean all those homophobic jokes about you John, just all those other real ***************s out there. You know, those people. Not you. You understand that, right?"

Give me a break...

Lots of "homo" jokes get thrown around this site, and when somebody takes a stand and tells you that this doesn't make them feel welcome at a reunion some of you have the gall to blame the victim???

Wow, I guess I'm not surprised, but somehow whenever this happens I still find myself flabbergasted at how immature some supposedly grown men on this site are. I stopped calling people or things I don't like "gay" or "homo" years ago and I'm not even 30 yet. It took some life experience and perspective to change me, and I am 100% sure that if some of you turning your back on John, making it "his problem", or outright blaming him spent a little more time thinking about what it is like to be on the outside looking in rather than defending yourselves this site would be a much easier place for people of other sexual orientations, genders, races, etc. to participate in. I don't blame John one bit for feeling the way he does.

Ironic that this flares up just as an Ohio senator comes out in favor of gay marriage. Of course it took his gay son to get him to change his mind. I hope that isn't what it takes for some CCFans to experience a similar change of perspective.

Ya, I think in the court of sexual orientation offenses, "insulted on internet boat forum" ranks pretty low. I've seen much worse banter on political orientation, or toyotas.

If the phrase "Get over it" ....is used in defense of a post.... it shows that sensitivity and comradery is not the priority.

I don't think anyone really likes to be insulted on the web cuz it's less offensive than rape or murder. Whether it is low on an individual's list doesn't matter; there's no acceptable insult list that anyone rightfully gets to generate.

What was said must not have been OK....cuz it has been edited out of the post.

Steve, I saw all the original posts before they were edited. There was nothing offensive. My "get over it" comment was directed to Hansel who seemed to think it was a good idea to jump into the ring swinging after the bell rung and the round was over.

It was edited because my poor use of analogy and irony for communicating an idea was confusing people. I left the main point of the hypocrisy of one person wanting accommodation and acceptance for who they are being offended, by someone else just being who they are, to the point of unwillingness to be near them.

Quote Dude, it was CHILDISH HUMOR.

That for me pretty much sums it up right there. When you make a childish joke and somebody near you tells you that they were offended you can...

1. Apologize, tell them you are sorry and that it won't happen again.
2. Just shut your mouth.
3. Blame them for being overly sensitive or "intolerant" to your view.

I think most CCFans do #2. Some feel the need to go the route of #3. Nobody apparently does #1 even though I bet many of us would take that route if this happened in person.

Quote ...one person wanting accommodation and acceptance for who they are being offended, by someone else just being who they are...

If a group of internet strangers are making fun of who you are, and I mean who you are not what you believe, where you work, what kind of car you drive, how much money you make, I mean who you are biologically I bet you'd take offense to that and I'd support you if you felt unwelcome by such a group.

Quote I've seen much worse banter on political orientation, or toyotas.

CCFans are good people. Sometimes bad things slip out, it happens. When people spew racist things (as I have sadly seen too many times) others stand up and tell them they are wrong. But apparently nobody here is willing to stand up for the "homos" and "queers" since I guess their innate sexuality is equal to somebody's political opinion or what kind of car they drive(!?).

That is wrong. I am not going to tolerate it and you shouldn't either.

Quote Nothing patently offensive was said or suggested. Get.....over......it. Victim???? of what?

A member of this community said they were offended, apparently enough to not want to attend reunions that they otherwise would. That makes it offensive. I'd be interested to see what your gay family members have to say about groups of strangers that makes jokes at their expense. You are free to choose option #3, but don't pretend like you didn't just pile on insult to injury.

Quote ...after the bell rung andthe round was over.

I'd be willing to bet that in fact it is replies like, "Get over it" that cause people to stay away from reunions more than any silly gay jokes between Kevin and Chris. The rapid defense of homophobia says a lot more about the character of some CCFans than any offhand joke between friends ever will.

Jamin, for the sake of the discussion, if the offender has a responsibility to the offended. What is the duty of the gay population to the percentage of the population that are offended by people merely openly being gay, say kissing in public? If somebody near them tells them that they were offended they can...

1. Apologize, tell them you are sorry and that it won't happen again.
2. Just shut your mouth.(that got weird in this context)
3. Blame them for being overly sensitive or "intolerant" to your view.

I could not imagine any person attending ANY reunion and coming away feeling isolated, left out or discriminated against in any way. It is a great group of people, diverse yes, but all good.

Get over it, we are all different with the same interest, a common bond, everything after that really does not matter.

Can't wait to meet Bret, and hopefully Hansel one day too.

I wasn't going to entertain this thread. However after reading Hansel's pm I decided to see what was being said. The reason why I spoke up was because what was going on in a thread that is devoted to "OMG there is a 1965 Mustang Correct Craft for $800.00 in Ohio" turned into the equivalent of calling each other the "N" word then posting a picture of your self covered in shoe polish with the caption "Look at the Monkey". different minority, same effect. If that happened I would have spoke up also. Did anyone mean it? I would hope not, but no one seems to see it, or is willing to admit they went to far, or oppologize. Instead it was blaimed on me. Fine, I can take it. But to heckle me for stating that this is the exact reason why I've shied away from the reunions. Hello, you've established that I'm a second rate citizen and my opions and feeling aren't valid. That is so welcoming.

Thanks Hansel and the others who have supported my speaking up. It is sad that a website devoted to people who love correct crafts has turned into "No we didn't offend the gay guy. He's just overly sensitive"

how much friggin snow is still on the ground?

What was said was WRONG, I knew it was wrong when I saw it. It offended a member, member speaks up for self, gets shouted down, another thread gets started to rehash it.

It was wrong if it offended him simply in the name of being kind to other people/members.

The homophobs need to grow up.

As a long time member here and one who has been to many reunions/gatherings I can tell you that my views or beliefs are different than some of the regular guys I hang out with at these functions. The political/religious/gun law threads should teach you something about the make up of the site itself. If you are that easily offended by whatever comes out of a members mouth then you'd better grow a thicker skin IMHO.

Back in the mid 80's I chose to join TKE Fraternity when I was in college because it was a group of young men from ALL walks of life. It wasn't a yuppie, jock, or geeky fraternity. What impressed me most about TKE and the men it was comprised of was a preppie sitting next to a redneck, who was sitting next to a brother who I found out later was gay. Thats the kind of group I want to be a part of and not because I'm an athlete, or come from a family with money. I actually had guys from another fraternity ask me what my father did and was he wealthy? The fraternities values are to this day Love, Charity and Esteem.

This group of Correct Craft Fanatics have taken the place of the men I spent 3 years EVERY day with and thats just one thing I love about this site. Some of the fans here I'm pretty close with just because we are at allot of gatherings together. I can tell you right this second that I don't agree with their religious or political views but I'm not going to let that interfere with the bond of friendship we have and won't hesitate to call them up just for the sake of catching up.

I'm a Conservative, Christian, white guy whose last name is Morfoot so I've taken much abuse from many people over the years. I'm not easily offended, so if you call me a bible thumping right winged morf#$* then go right ahead. I don't have an issue if someone is different than me cause most of you smucks are! IMHO people are too easily offended these days and need to grow thicker skins. Life is tough and one thing I learned with a last name like mine is if you let them know it gets to you it's only gonna make things worse.

Bottom line as said before it's about the boat and the common love for it. If a reunion is comprised of atheist, democratic CCFans I'll still be there because my signature line says it all.

Amen Timmer. I find it odd that some people's view of protecting free speech and controlling censorship only applies until they see/hear something they don't agree with and then it is a problem. Hypocritical.

Tim:

You know I love you man but..... it's inconsistent with your faith to share a common love for boats and tell folks to get a thicker skin. We are to love our fellow man, not because of the boat he owns but because he is our neighbor - period.......... Oh and BTW, it was a commandment by our Creator.

Free speech is what it is....everyone can say anything they want. But there are consequences to words and deeds....ask any parent, child or divorcee. Alienation, seperation from one another and the appearance of bigotry are the consequences....but certainly the speech is free.

I don't usually weigh in on this stuff cuz it just needs to stop. Reposting just keeps it going......... but I get so tired of the bigger picture of posting slanderous, hurtful or biggoted words and it somehow being OK because "it is the internet", or "there is free speech", or "people are too sensitive"....... wrong is wrong.

Calling names is not consistent with a Judeo-Christian faith and morals structure. It isn't who I know you, or many others on this site, to be because I have met you all at reunions and have interacted with you and your families. Because of the reunions, I can look past the goofy posts and immature comments. The reunions are great - they are ABSOLUTELY worth attending. It's great we have them to bring us together...esp. when stupid words pull us apart.

I share in the encouragement to go to reunions.... skiing with a person makes it all good. Try it!
