Well I figured out why my 86 only wants to turn in one direction...
According to the receipts I have, the original owner had the steering cable replaced with the wrong one back in 2006. The limited travel only allows the rudder to turn a little to the port and maybe 45 deg to the starboard. Anyway, I'm looking for the special S1529 steering cable. Does anyone know where I can get a reasonable deal on one? Forum discount etc? Thanks! Chuck |

I have never replaced a cable but I had a clamp block come loose once and it acted as you describe. Someone with more knowledge will be along but I'd check it.

Yeah, thats a dealer/authorized CC parts house item only. The cable is CC specific and not cheap. The long clamp tube combined with the standard throw cable might be limiting your travel even more than a fully generic set up would... but you could at least center the travel by adjusting the tube within the clamp block properly. Best bet is to get a new cable though- you'll appreciate the extra steering travel.

Has anyone ever tried to modify or hack up a generic cable to get more travel out of it? I'm almost tempted to find a shorter steering arm or modify the stocker. I'd trade off a little more steering effort right now. Any chance a pre-82 or post 90 boat uses a shorter steering arm and that's why they don't need the special long-travel cable?

No, the same tiller arm was used before and after the special 2001 cable (82-90). Earlier boats were smaller and werent as adversely affected by the limited wheel travel- but you do notice it. The newer boats used different steering systems entirely. I do not think modifying a generic cable could be done easily or cheaply. I bet the ram at the rudder end is a different length, and the spiral end that feeds into the helm is too. Just a guess. |

This isn't Zach's fault. Blame CC for this one. They're the ones who decided that they needed a completely non-standard cable than what everybody else uses. So the cable manufacturers can stick it to you for a one-off cable now. You want a CC, this is one of those instances where you gotta pay to play. Deal with it. |

I wouldnt "blame" CC for using a non-standard cable... it does offer a tighter turning radius and/or lower steering effort vs. a standard cable. It would be cheap and straightforward to swap out clamp tubes and move the clamp block mount a little (if necessary) in order to run the standard cable- you just give up some steering performance in doing so.
Agreed though- if you want the special cable, you gotta pay to play! Its expensive no matter where you get it. |

Ain't that the truth. Mine got a fresh one this spring. You can't even order them from a cable manufacturer Eddie. I have tried to contact Teleflex to do my own run to save some folks some money but no dice. CC only and I am sure they order them by the 500+.

How does a 91 or 92 deal with it? Don't they use a standard travel cable? Seems like it would be cheaper to swap in a newer rack and pinion helm and a standard 18' cable. Has anyone tried this?

I believe that cable has longer travel as well but it was a helm supplied by Morse that is no longer in production. I know some Tige boats used it but there again CC is the only company to order half size cables.
It gets to a point where converting the 91- boats to a modern set up is best. Thankfully the Big T is still in production for the 90 and older boats so we can keep the original style Teleflex helm bezel on our boats. |
