Might be the ceramic resistor. jumper across the resistor and see if your problem goes away. If so, replace it...do not get rid of it.

I had that problem, took forever to figure out what was wrong.Turned out my tach was grounded or something, causing my coil to overheat .I replaced the coil, unhooked the tach and never had the problem again.I would think that it is coil related

also the tach can short out and kill the engine, but this usually is during higher RPM's.
the tach is wired through the coil.

Tyler,
Did you leave the resistor hooked up as original, or did you bypass it? I may be having the same problem with my 85 351W.

I had a very similar problem with my 83. New coil and left everything else the same. Problem seems to be solved. We had a great run Saturday with no problems.
