BKH- What is so unfair about it? The only difference in the fair tax and what you propose is when you tax it. The advantage to taxing consumption is that everyone pays, no exceptions. For example, illegal immigrants that get paid under the table, drug dealers, prostitutes, etc, you get the point. People that don't necessarily report an income.

Eric- Why should I be penalized for your decisions? If you chose to have 4 kids, you should know that there are expenses that go along with that. If I chose not to have any, why should I not be able to enjoy a nicer lifestyle?

The FairTax does not only help the rich and hurt the poor and middle class. Think about it for a minute. Do the super rich by used cars or really expensive new ones? Do they buy your used house or build a huge new one? They are still going to do these things and they will still be bearing a majority of the tax burden. The poor and middle class and everyone could, if they so chose, live tax free with the prebate they get for food and buying only used items. How is that hurting anyone?

Read the book. It is actually very entertaining along with informative.

WhoooHooo, Yippee, Hoorayy!

Thanks for the backup Adam, and it's nice to hear from someone who read the book(or both)!

I feel like I'm known as the political dissident around here so it's nice to hear from another informed CCFan.

I began to write out a response about all the reasons a consumption based tax as our sole source of government funding is ridiculous. I deleted it.

Fact is, I knew I should have kept my mouth shut in the first place. If I say what I really think, I'll inevitably piss off someone who doesn't share my views, and with whom I have no beef in the first place. I come back to this site time and again because I love the boats, and I really like the people, not to stir up a bunch of ill feelings.

Azeus and Buffalo, if I ever meet you personally, we can have a friendly debate.

For now, I'll just use my one vote for whatever tax proposals are put on the table.

First, let me say that I am a registered Independent. I listen to all options and then decide. I expect anyone that spends my money to do so with the same frugality that I do.

As I will be leaving the working environment soon, I look forward to living on as much of the government as I can. I have set up my finances so that I will pay little to no taxes each year when I leave work.

If not for me still working this year, the wife (retired in 2007 but still pays her 1/2 of our expenses), would actually have received Stimulus money and would not have paid in a dime (filing married but seperate). But when we add her interest to my interest/income, we pay as usual...

I have paid into the system for 35 years and have paid what I feel has been more than my Fair Share. I now plan to enjoy the benefits from my labors and off the back of the taxpayer. That means that I continue to use DOT resources and have security from our Armed Forces but no longer pay for it.

If you plan well, you can too.. I have learned from those that figured it out before me. But I am still a registed Independent.

OK.. Flame Away...

BKH-
I hope we do meet some day and I think we could debate until we are blue in the face. Trust me, I do not get angry at people for having their own opinion and I enjoy the challenge of an educated adversary.

Critter-
I am glad you have planned well and can accomplish your desired lifestyle in retirement. Unlike you, I do not plan on any help from the government when I retire because I am not sure there will be anything left to give at that point! (I am at least 30 years away)

Edit: After reading this back, it seems like I am bashing Critter a little. Sorry, that is not what I intended. More meant to come off as I do not expect social security and the like to be around when I retire.

its not being penalized Azeus, I just feel the more you make the more they should take, if your up in the 7 figure income i feel it should be a 25 to 30% tax on that income, up to 100k maybe 10%, fine tune the system.
if you havnt figured out what money does to people in the last couple years.
the problem though is the very wealthy sometimes tend to be generous and give to charities....for the write off, its complex
I guess my point is if you make 1 million and you are taxed 30% that leaves you 700k, very easy to live on and really wont be missed, but on 100k, that 30% would be missed and would affect lifestyle....now if i made 1 milly a year, i surely would bitch about 30%.....but wouldnt miss it

Adam.. not taken as bashing.
But I did not say anything above about collecting social security. I do not expect it to be there when I reach 65 either. I have made my plans based soley on my means. My wife means are expected to cover 1/2 of the household expenses too. As I mentioned in my eariler post, we plan to live on our investments and savings but not have to pay taxes. That took a lot of planning.
The living on the government part was referring to DOT and Armed Forces, etc. as I do understand that nothing is free (someone has to pay for it). Just not me anymore...

No ribs this time around. No living large for us.

Eric, what's up with the run on ammo? The price has more than doubled since Obama got in and finding .223, .45 and 9MM has become really difficult.
