1990 SN FORD 351 PMC
My current remote mounted fuel filter separator is a FRAM, FCS1136M I believe. Mounted to a bracket, which is tapped into the aluminum stringer, engine compartment forward port side. It has an orange top and an 8" black housing that spins on & off, with the FRAM CCS1136 long filter inside. The folks at SKIDIM talked me into a new type spin-on canister & mount. It is a Sierra (Teleflex) 18-7852-1 with a #18-7845 Separating Filter that spins on. This mount will require drilling new holes to the existing bracket or stringer. All the fittings are the same. I didn't realize the mounting of the new Sierra housing (bolts from side) would be different than the older Fram (bolts from top). Before I do the new install, I'm wondering why SKIDIM recommended this change, I'll call them on Monday ... but will this change/upgrade be worth the effort ? And, when changing fuel filters, should I fill the new canister with clean fuel before assembly and do I need to bleed air after installing new filter, and if so, how is this done ? thanks, cheers, John |

Why did you change?
The Fram is a supurb filter a bit bulky but works great none the less. Wix also makes a replacment cartrige (# 33436) for the fram Filter seperator. |

i have done exactly the same upgrade to my 196 1991. i had the same filter and changed to the spin on one. I removed the old filter bracket, cut it about 2 inches up from the 90degree bend, filed off the edges, drilled 2 new holes for the new spin on bracket to bolt onto then bolted it on. Fairly easy, just modify your existing bracket!

Thanks Chris ... why did you use / modify the bracket, instead of abandoning the bracket entirely, and drill/tap the black mounting bracket/housing that comes with the Sierra directly to the stringer ? This is what I am thinking ...

hi john, just so that i could use the existing holes already in the stringer, and not having to drill new holes and fill the old ones, also the lower jo go with it, the harder it will make it to change.

I got mine off on my '79 Mustang. It ended up being a Fram 1110CL, not the 1136. From the earlier discussion, I got the impression that fuel filters come off just like an oil filter. Mine looks like that, but it's not the case. You have to undo a bolt that holds it on, which is on the top of the filter unit. I wasted a lot of time grunting away at the thing with an oil filter wrench. Just wanted to put that out there, in case somebody else is wasting time trying to get it off like that.
