I have an '89 Barefoot with a rattling steering rudder and was wondering what I could do to adjust the vertical slop/space out of the rudder. Help.

there should be some vertical movement. You could try repacking the rudder. Chances are the old packing has deteriated away over time and needs to be replaced. Try about 4 rings of packing rope and see if it improves things.
