Nope, You can't buy anything for $350 for your motor that will equal the performance of a new $350 540 prop. Crack that first bolt on teh motor loose and you've opened Pandora's box. |

Gentlemen,
Can I get a quick education on prop size and pitch? My 80 Tique has a 12-14 on it now. It has the letters CUP-NI-BRAL? and 12-14. From what I've read here, it's not the best set up. We will be wake boarding, boom barefooting, and dragging the kids on a tube occasionally. I assume that the more motor you have the bigger the prop, but how does pitch affect bottom end? Is it more torquey if it has less pitch? Thanks for your help, and yes, I (well, my 15 year old son) tried to put pics on my signature and it wouldn't load them or my profile. Will work on that some more. |

First, let me say that this thread is probably not the most applicable place to discuss your question... the 82+ Ski Tique is a totally different animal than your '76-81 version. In '82, CC gave the Ski Tique the "old" 2nd gen Ski Nautique hull (70-81, 17'9"), so its a much larger boat than your 16'5" version. The larger hull can fit a larger diameter (13" vs. 12"), and Pat's particular boat has a 351w, which was never an option on the pre-82 Tique. That being said, the 12x14 Federal would have been the original prop on your boat- and while there are a few choices available to you these days, that original prop isnt terrible. It'll turn in a pretty respectable top end speed, even compared to the other offerings, and is not a bad all-around wheel. That being said, a 12x13 OJ Legend or a Acme 1210 (12.5x12) are other great options. The 1210 is my personal favorite for a stock 302-powered 16' boat when it comes to pulling watersports (I have one on my '71 Skier, same hull as your Tique). The larger the pitch, the lower the WOT RPM's, and the slower the boat will be out of the hole. Comparing something like the Acme 1210 and original Federal 12x14 is a little tougher than simply looking at the measurements... the difference in blade surface area is pretty significant, which has a significant impact on performance. In my experience, the 12x13 OJ runs about 100 more RPM at WOT than the 12x14 Fed, and the 1210 runs about 200 rpm more then the OJ. |

Tim,
Tim really gave you a great explanation on props. He is our on site prop expert and has put in many an hour of testing them on many different hulls. He's also the greatest member with a knowledge base of CC hulls I know of. Now, this statement concerns me:
Take a look at the Get the kids out on the water thread and teach them some skills. You are doing them no service with pulling them on the tube plus no service or consideration to others on the lake. Sorry, but I and other members here have no respect for tubing. Get them out on the ski's or a board. BTW, How old are they? Any pictures yet? |

Yeah, sure, photo-shopped! I'd be embarrassed too, Pete! As for the kids, they all wakeboard and ski, and my 15 year old son is gonna follow in my barefoot steps this spring! I also have three daughters, 20, 16, and 12. I've skiied since learning on Lake Norris, TN., when I was about 10. We actually don't own a tube, I just wanted to establish the the boat will be multi-use.
