repalcing steering cable on "88" 2001 SN

Would like to get some pointers on replacing the cable on my boat. How to get it centered so as to have the same amount of turns right to left from lock to lock. Thanks

Getting the steering travel centered is a function of where to install the clamp block on the clamp tube. This should not change from cable to cable, assuming youre using the proper Correct Craft cable with the longer throw. You have to swap the clamp tube over from the old cable, so it should be clear where it was installed originally. If not, then just play with that adjustment until you have equal travel.

Getting the steering wheel centered is a little trickier... that is a function of the wheel's position when you insert the cable into the helm. It may take a little trial and error for you to get the wheel straight when traveling straight.

Removal/install is pretty easy... I would recommend taking the old cable out from front to back. Tie a rope to it and feed the new cable in from back to front.

Count the number of turns on the helm so you can then center it. Adjust the tube clamp block at the aft end of the new cable until the rudder is centered.

So if I buy a cable from somewhere else besides NautiqueParts.com the throw (travel) will be different? It's a teleflex rotary cable

You dont have to buy it from Nautiqueparts.com, but you will need to get it from a dealer or another authorized source for Correct Craft parts. While it may appear to be a normal catalog rotary cable, it is not- Teleflex built this particular one (for the 1982-1990 Ski Nautiques) specifically for Correct Craft. They will not sell it to you directly (I have asked). It has a longer throw than the standard cable (10.5" vs. 8") which results in a much tighter turning radius. The 17.5' length is also oddball, but that is a lesser concern.

Will the 17' cable from ski dim work or do I need the 18' since the cable on mine is 17.5'

I understood, I just thought Skidim carried the correct parts for the SN. I will call them and check tomorrow and if not I will be checking with a local dealer.

No, SkiDIM does not carry the CC-specific cables... thats a dealer item.

I wouldn't worry about the steering wheel when you install. Worry about the throw first, then pop the cover off the wheel and adjust the wheel by loosening the nut behind the center cap.

Probably not the safest method, but Jody told me to get the boat to speed in a straight line with it finger tight and then lock the nut back down. Obviously do this in controlled conditions, not saturday on a July 4th weekend. I did this with our 96 and it's spot on now.

Chris, that trick may only work on a R&P system... I dont believe a rotary system has that kind of flexibility.

Ah, didn't even think of that! I'l be curious to see how hard it is to get the wheel back center.
