We've got a 2008 CC 206 with a PCM EX 343. Husband's boat-(I'm the cheap good looking mechanic) Anyway, to make a long story short, he winterized the boat last fall, and started it up this spring. BUT, he forgot to open the fresh water valve and drove it for about 10 minutes until the engine went into reduced power mode. He went back to the dock, engine was hot (of course). He is going down this weekend to check it out, to see if any damage was done. Herein lies the question: how do you check for damage in a situation like this-and what tools are necessary-I've ordered the Rinda Techmate scan tool-as that would give us a starting point to look for any freezeframe stored codes, and also any current codes that the engine is throwing. Any other suggestions? Compression test? Impeller involvement? I'm open to suggestions. Oh yes, he will open the fresh water valve this weekend.

About the only thing you can do, is change the oil, and change the raw water pump impellar. Any other damage if there is any is already done at this point, but 10 minutes without cooling water is not all that bad, at idle or low speed operations. Did it loose oil pressure, or start making any weird mechanical noises prior to being shutdown?

The impeller is toast. Start there. Pull hoses fore and aft of the pump because the pieces will go both directions. Back flush until you find most if not all the pieces from what used to be your impeller.
Next concern is the exhaust. Look at the risers, is the paint blistered? Look at the hoses, are they melted? Service as found.
I would probably change the riser gaskets as a precautionary measure.
Check the oil for water, pull the oil fill cap and look for droplets or emulsion. If water is found, forget all the above and go to the nearest bar. Order a double, and another.

My first concern after replacing the impeller would be the head gaskets.

I'd suggest trading in your husband and keeping the boat! Yes, we all do make mistakes and hopefully his will not cause major issues.

Your fiberglass exhaust down hoses after the manifolds could be a problem, as the other guys said, new impeller, if the old one is missing peices check the hoses for the impeller shrapnel. After that run it and watch everything, temp gauge, hoses for leaks, etc. My guess is you will be OK, limp mode may have saved the day.

Ok guys, this is what the plan is after looking
at responses, talking with the dealer, and with PCM:
1. Replace Impeller
2. Check for shrapnel from impeller
3. Clear hoses around impeller by flushing out with water
4. Check Oil, make sure no water in it/thinned out
5. Feel exhaust hoses for soft areas
6. Start boat, run Techmate scan for logged/freezeframe codes
and for live codes-as sensors might have overheated
7. Hold breath and hopefully not have to go to bar. Nautique tech
did say that ECM scan is critical so glad i ordered it.
Will send mechanic pics if you all prove to be
on the money about this!

When looking for pieces of the impeller, take the thermostat out, sometimes they get stuck under it.

He got the old impeller out-and not too bad, not too bad I don't think, but look for yourselves-next step is replacing it, and then using scan tool. Stand by for more info.

susan the nautique man? when I saw the first post I assumed a mechanic named nautique man with a husband was a gay couple...guess I've been wrong before.

that impeller doesn't look too bad at all...of course, I've never seen one out of the packaging so I have zero point of reference, but at least all the spinny things are still there.

Nope, sign-on is due to husband, too much work making another, I'm just a mechanic wife that is in charge of driving the boat, and fixing it for free.

Ok!
Impeller replaced. Started boat.Then ran Techmate scan- the only code that
came up was a freezeframe code of overheat- expected
that. No current codes. Operating parameters
seem to be normal- so he's taking it out tomorrow and see
how it runs. Bullet dodged, bar time averted.

To completely diagnose the issue you will need a Hewlett-Packard model 5710a with flame analyzing detectors preferably the floor model since it was turbo-charged!

Ok so boat test drive is this afternoon-I feel pretty confident that it's going to go well. Yes, will change oil soon. Nice to see the real sac o suds exist. Yes, will entertain you all in a few weeks with a picture you are dying for, though probably not all that exciting. Has to wait until this leg cast comes off in a few weeks-I do think my virtual fix with my helper onsite worked pretty good this time
