Hi All,
Been on here for a few weeks now, muddling through all the great information and getting myself realistic about the restoration project of the boat that is so dear to my heart. Needing help re: motor. The original 302 crank shaft broke into two 6 yrs ago. The boat had it's motor pulled, and a replacement block put in (unsure of the year but it had been a replacement motor for an '83 F150- put into the truck in the earl 2000s). Old engine and bits were all sent to scrap yard. I have some wood & fiberglass repair to do on the stringers, too. Fast forward to today- we've got a LR motor and a RR boat... we have the marine starter, carburetor, exhaust manifolds, and not much else. I've gotten some good suggestions on my main thread Main Restoration Thread and also had a good recommendation to post here, in General, too. So, if time and money weren't an issue- how would you go about getting the motor running? Thanks in advance! |

Take a couple of pictures of the engine and parts you have. You say you have starter, carb, exhaust. Do you have the motor mounts, bellhousing, alternator, raw water pump and it’s bracketry, etc? Let’s figure out what you have and don’t have first. Pictures would really help.

It's relatively easy to buy a whole new 302 reverse rotation, 2 piece main seal long block so if you put some pictures up like Gary mentioned and do some engine disassembly to figure out what bolt on parts you have it wouldn't be a terrible project. The 2 piece rear main seal engine was what was originally in your boat
Here's a link down below to a company that'll sell you a long block as described above. It's stock number is DM 35 link The guy on the phone will tell you that they don't sell to the public and then offer to transfer you to their branch that does. Then somebody from Gearhead engines picks up and you can order a long block. You could get the same ATK long block through Summit, Jeg's etc but ATK/Gearhead have a 10% off deal sometimes. Free shipping from Texas to Maine in roughly 5 maybe 6 days . 1880 bucks but all the tough stuff is done. And remember that you need to verify what you have now for parts as Gary mentioned And another and ...................whatever you have for a starter now may turn the engine the wrong way, but that can get figured out before putting it on the engine. The starter has bit plenty of people. You may or may not have the original reverse rotating starter right now. |

Thank you!!!
To refresh the thread, since we're ready to spend some money... The original engine is gone. We still have the original exhaust and intake manifolds, carburetor, transmission, drive plate, flywheel, the accessory brackets, raw water pump, alternator, oil pan, distributor, starter. and the engine mounts. If we call the guys over at ATK, and order up a DM35 (Ford 302 Marine Engine, 75-87 Reverse Rotation) do we need to do/get anything else major? While not yet a boat guy, my husband is an engine guy so we are leaning towards installing that ourselves to try to save a bit of money. I've found a guy, Rob, at https://www.lakesregionwoodenboats.com who would (I think, still waiting on a quote- we had a great conversation today) do the structural repair for me. If we can afford it, we want to source that out to someone with the time, skill, and experience to do it right so this boat will last us a long, long time. Really appreciate all the help!! |

Here's a direct link to Rob at LRWB I'm sure he's qualified but my only concern is his cost. A wooden boat shop is Wolfeboro NH is not going to come cheap. |

Your hubby being an engine guy, shouldn't have much problem getting the ATK long block finished and installed ![]() Just remember that the starter and distributor and a few other parts you have now need to be for a RR engine. With the previous normal rotation truck engine mentioned in the first post, it's hard to know what you have right now for the starter or distributor. A picture of the distributor showing the gear on the bottom of the shaft would be a good thing to post about now to give an idea about what you might have . ![]() |

I'll get those pictures tonight! I know Rob will probably be expensive, I'm worried I won't fix it correctly and after talking to a few folks and Rob- I have confidence in his skills. Our camp is on Balch Lake, East Wakefield NH so Wolfeboro, although far from home, is close to camp. We'll see what he quotes me, maybe the sticker shock will be motivation- right now we've got a near 5 yr old and an 18 month old so finding time to tinker on the boat is hard.

I’ve done 2 ATK’s and have been happy so far. I forget the details but they’re a “TexMex” company. I was actually happier with them than Jasper. |

I have a 302 that purchased a long block from Summit Racing that I installed into my 67 Starflite that I decided to part out. I also had installed a DUI distributor. I also purchased new exhaust manifolds when the for it when the new long block was installed. It is about three years old with only a few hours each year. I didn't run it last year at all. I have it sitting in my new shed ready to be pulled. Let me know if you are interested and i can give some more details.

That Summit 302 is likely an ATK. Summit sells a few other brands though. Summit is who I bought my last one from. Good peeps.

I have original paperwork somewhere. I can check but that doesn't sound right. I will try to find it and report back.
