After seeing these pictures I'm kind of bummed I didn't make it. Those are some kick ass boats you don't see everyday.

Went out skiing on Powers instead Pete. I only had a few hours on the water so wanted to max it out. I was a little late as is from walking the dog and had some guests waiting on me.

If your kids don't mind a little chill, I'd be happy to have them out with us one of these weekends. The water is still in the mid 60s it ain't bad at all.

HW, Thanks for the invite as I'm sure my kids would enjoy it. With all the time they spend with practice/shows all summer long I'm always surprised they only have one thing on their minds - Let's go sking!! The only problem is my daughter is at school at northern Il. and my son went back to northern Mich. this year.

Pete,

Where in Northern Michigan?

Brownie is up on Glen Lake near Traverse City and can never find anyone to ski with this time of year.

Good move on telling HW Darcie is at school!

That gentleman's runabout above is pretty sweet, would be a weird feeling to drive one of those & basically not be able to see the horizon at all. Also, i dunno just not a fan of the copper boat, that boat was chrome originally & those boats look awesome with all that chrome, i dunno why you'd want to kinda "tone it down" though i guess it does make it stand out a bit more. to each their own though, still a pretty boat.

Pete,

What is the boat above, Morin Boats, with the front of helm mounted engine? It almost looks like it could be modern built or is it an old original? Really neat either way.

The more pic's I see the sorrier I am that we were unable to make it there over the weekend.

Chris, The Morin is a reproduction of a gentlemans racer. Don't know the exact year but it's not more than 10 years old. There are a few custom builders around that will build 1 or 2 boats a year. It is a very specialized market.

Streblow is still building the same wood boats with minor mods over the years. 99% of them go to lake Geneva. They will not build on spec. but are considered one of the few wood boat buiders still around.

Greg, The boat in the ad is a Riviara which was pre Capri but pretty much the same boat. You can tell easy because it doesn't have the bull nose stem.

Just like building a house on "spec" or the speculation of a sale. They must have a buyer with big bucks first!

Great pics Pat, thanks for putting them all up. We attended that show a few years ago and the Abbey is a great setting for it with most of the boats in the water. Did you stick around for their end of day boat parade? That's a real treat, the sound is incredible.

Alan, Never!! Here's one of the water patrol boats. It was repowered several times and has twin big block Mercs in it now and no mufflers! It by the way is a old Hacker Craft.
Lots of old boats running with the old straight pipes infact, I think all the Streblows still are without mufflers.

Not really, the noise isn't a issue on Geneva unless it is so offensive say with a over the transom exhaust on a jet. I really think this is the norm in the state and the authorities will use the ordinance only on the problem boats. I think Barney in GL is the exception!

From a quick Google search

Miss Rosie U-235
1997 Gold Cup hull with 1998 Chevy 468
Owned by Tom Costello of Coloma, Michigan
Miss Rosie is a replica boat loosely designed after Gail's Roostertail, the last stepped hydro to compete in the Unlimited Class. She was designed to be able to run on local lakes when muffled and has all the required safety equipment for pleasure running. The idea was to create a boat that looked like a old-time racers but can be used for pleasure boating. She has run in numerous vintage events since she was built. Currently, her picture is featured on the APBA website under Categories, Vintage.

Pete,

That Patrol Boat has been out there a long time, remember seeing it as a kid when my dad's bud Stew had us up to his place on Lake Geneva regularly, Stew had an old 4 banger Woody Chris for us kid's to use & ski behind and a giant twin BB offshore style with the name "Poverty Sucks", even skied behind the big boat a few times.

Another thing on Lake Geneva that is pretty cool, if it still exist's, is that they deliver the US Mail via the water.

PS, no I never got a ride in that Cop boat, at least that particular one anyways!

Chris, That Patrol boat was purchased new in 1948. It was the first boat they had and now have a total of 5 on the lake. They really keep it in great shape and is actually the preferred boat!

I think the mail delivery by water has ended. We had it up in Three Lakes until I believe 1970. It started when there were no roads to some of the houses. Even today the roads are a challenge. I have friends across the lake that it takes me 5 minutes to get to by jumping in the aluminum fishing boat whereas 25 minutes if I go by car.

I really like the lines of the patrol boat, its a beautiful craft... Almost worth getting chased, just to see her go...
