Just don't take the "multi-use" too far!

Tim,
Tim really gave you a great explanation on props. He is our on site prop expert and has put in many an hour of testing them on many different hulls. He's also the greatest member with a knowledge base of CC hulls I know of.

Now, this statement concerns me:

BTW, How old are they?

Any pictures yet?

We will be wake boarding, boom barefooting, and dragging the kids on a tube occasionally. I assume that the more motor you have the bigger the prop, but how does pitch affect bottom end? Is it more torquey if it has less pitch? Thanks for your help, and yes, I (well, my 15 year old son) tried to put pics on my signature and it wouldn't load them or my profile. Will work on that some more.

First, let me say that this thread is probably not the most applicable place to discuss your question... the 82+ Ski Tique is a totally different animal than your '76-81 version. In '82, CC gave the Ski Tique the "old" 2nd gen Ski Nautique hull (70-81, 17'9"), so its a much larger boat than your 16'5" version. The larger hull can fit a larger diameter (13" vs. 12"), and Pat's particular boat has a 351w, which was never an option on the pre-82 Tique.

That being said, the 12x14 Federal would have been the original prop on your boat- and while there are a few choices available to you these days, that original prop isnt terrible. It'll turn in a pretty respectable top end speed, even compared to the other offerings, and is not a bad all-around wheel. That being said, a 12x13 OJ Legend or a Acme 1210 (12.5x12) are other great options. The 1210 is my personal favorite for a stock 302-powered 16' boat when it comes to pulling watersports (I have one on my '71 Skier, same hull as your Tique).

The larger the pitch, the lower the WOT RPM's, and the slower the boat will be out of the hole. Comparing something like the Acme 1210 and original Federal 12x14 is a little tougher than simply looking at the measurements... the difference in blade surface area is pretty significant, which has a significant impact on performance. In my experience, the 12x13 OJ runs about 100 more RPM at WOT than the 12x14 Fed, and the 1210 runs about 200 rpm more then the OJ.

Precisely, that's why the 540 is now my "spare"

Maybe I should just keep my 13X13 and use the 350 bucks I would have spent on a prop towards performance upgrades. Instead of getting a prop to suit my engine maybe I should make my engine fit my prop. Thats what I will tell my wife anyway.

Nope, You can't buy anything for $350 for your motor that will equal the performance of a new $350 540 prop. Crack that first bolt on teh motor loose and you've opened Pandora's box.

13x13 is the original prop. The modern CNC props tend to drop a little in pitch to offer comparable performance numbers (speed vs. RPM), probably because of the larger blade surface area. So long as youre turning in the 4400 range, thats correct- though you'd likely pick up some performance (both top end and holeshot) with something like a 13x12 540.

I am running a 13X13 prop on my 86 now. Is that too much prop? Would I do better with a 13X12? Would it give me more top end or hole shot or both? I get about 43 top speed with 4 people in the boat with current prop.

Nice new picture, Pat.

So, If Alan is running a 540 w/350 hp.
Wouldn't Pat want the 542 w/ less pitch?

The CNC will be used at the lake on weekends, old will be used on the river.

I fell is love with our ACME 422 on the 96, if the 540 acts the remotely close to the 422 we will be happy campers!

The Federal does all it's suppose to, for me.

If I ever feel the need to go faster, I use an old Ellis Propeller.

I especially wouldn't run a CNC in a river.
Well, not without a spare Federal or Michigan on board.

I agree with the Magic Man, this thing will be used for skiing the river and as a boom boat. Sounds like the 540 is the ticket for performance.

Reid is going to bring up the 540 and possible a 4 blade OJ. We'll see what works best next weekend at the reunion!

Agree 100% on the higher cost/easily damaged BUT once you try the 540 the old federal will become a candle holder for the picnic table. We are talking apples to oranges in terms of performance.

Now that sounds like a good deal!

Pat, I'm sure we can make it through another week with the old wheel. I know a guy with a puller who may let you bring it up to the reunion in exchange for a few more boom runs this weekend!

Sounds like a solid plan - thanks guys!
